About the role
Reporting to the Supervisor: Project Delivery, the position of Construction Specialist oversees major construction projects across Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) portfolio totalling approx. $150m per annum (varying in size from $1m to $100m with most in the $15m to $30m range). This role also provides advice, support and mentoring where required to the Program Specialists and Project Officers who are directly responsible for managing the delivery of those projects.
The function is also responsible for overseeing and driving the performance of external project managers and building contractors with respect to construction program, cost and variations, methodology, buildability, safety, risk management, quality outcomes, commissioning and handover.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- working collaboratively with stakeholders, consultants and colleagues (including Minor Works and Facilities Teams) to review, advise and monitor all aspects of construction, specifically in program, design, specifications, methodology, risks, budget, cost, procurement, buildability, value engineering, safety, quality, commissioning and handover throughout the entire lifecycle of a project
- developing innovative and effective solutions for the delivery of school capital works
- using appropriate document management systems of capital building projects using existing SCS systems and liaising with external consultants and contractors
- participating in stakeholder engagement and communication with local councils and authorities, schools and local communities to develop and maintain collaborative and productive relationships
- contributing to developing strategies to continually improve the SCS and schools' shared responsibilities
- working with the SCS Asset Maintenance team to ensure a smooth transition of new assets for ongoing maintenance
- participating in post-implementation reviews of projects to capture identified deficiencies in program/system design, recommending modifications and enhancements to optimise resources, and implementing lessons learnt on other designs and delivery of works, consultant and contractor quality/compliance
- preparing reports as necessary on all aspects of projects in construction
- acknowledging that SCS is a child-safe environment and all concerns regarding child safety and allegations of inappropriate conduct will be treated seriously, by reporting all claims to their line manager and the SCS Child Safety team.
About you
To be successful in this position, you must possess:
- minimum ten years of professional experience in a Senior Site Manager or Senior Construction Side Project Manager role and ten years experience in a Site Manager role on projects up to $100m in value
- demonstrated ability to successfully initiate, coordinate and deliver large, complex capital project projects and minor works programs
- experience in leading and managing site teams in a complex and dynamic project delivery environment
- experience in collaborating in teams delivering projects within strictly controlled timelines and system budgets
- experience in assessing and providing technical advice concerning construction, safety, quality and program
- competency in working with a range of specialist software packages such as Microsoft Office (for reports, presentations and budget control); and project management software such as Aconex to assist in tracking project delivery
- proven knowledge of a range of all legislative requirements relevant to construction
- willingness to respect, support and uphold the mission, ethos and teachings of the Catholic Church and the values of Sydney Catholic Schools
- a current driver's licence.
In addition, the successful candidate must have:
- Senior Site or Senior Construction Side Project Manager management experience on Primary and Secondary education projects
- a builder's Licence
- demonstrated knowledge of current educational facilities design and an appreciation of the link between contemporary pedagogy and space is beneficial.
