SAHMRI Is located on the lands of Kaurna people who are the traditional custodians of Adelaide and the greater Adelaide region. SAHMRI works with traditional custodians across South Australia, Australia and globally. This role is required to collaborate with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on the lands of all traditional custodians across South Australia and potentially globally.
The Coolamon Navigator (Project Manager) will provide a professional level of research support to project(s) and research activities of the Aboriginal Families and Communities Health Research Alliance priority projects (ACRA). This includes working within hospital setting(s) and navigating services available for pregnant women having an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander baby. The overall research is to implement and evaluate the feasibility support and care packages for pregnant mothers, Aboriginal babies, and their support person.
This position will be based at SAHMRI Women and Kids and will work across multiple maternity hospital sites (Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Lyell McEwin Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre). There may be requirement to travel between hospital and SAHMRI sites.
Key responsibilities include:
- Research support to the ICARE project and other research activities within ACRA
- Facilitate the use of the Coolamon Wraparound Program for women of Aboriginal babies through strategies that respond to each woman’s, child’s, partner’s, and families’ needs as identified through Baby Coming You Ready program (or other enrolment pathways).
- Create and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and service providers that may be providing support or services for the Coolamon Wraparound Care model.
- Negotiate with clinical and managerial staff and stakeholders to identify and seek solutions for the implementation of Coolamon in the South Australian sites.
- Supervise SA Coolamon Research Assistants to ensure smooth implementation of the Coolamon program.
- Maintain good working relationships with study participants, the research team, medical staff, and other external stakeholders, within hospital and community settings.
- Support the mentorship, training, professional development and/or supervision of trainees, undergraduate, post graduate research students, peers and senior program leads as applicable.
- Take reasonable care to protect own health, safety and welfare at work and avoid affecting the health and safety of any other person at work.
- Ensure that duties are performed in keeping with the principles outlined in SAHMRI’s Vision, Mission and Values and the Code of Conduct Policy.

- Experience communicating with a broad network of health and other support professionals and academic staff to foster and maintain a productive and collaborative working environment.
- Support the SAHMRI commitment to reconciliation and acknowledge the importance of working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Special Requirements
- Some out of hours’ work may be required.
- DCSI Working with Children and Police Checks may be required.
- Primarily located at SAHMRI Women and Kids (North Terrace), but travel to other SAHMRI sites including (and not limited to) Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Lyell McEwin Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre or other locations as directed.
- All employees are required to be immunised in accordance with the requirements of the Hospital in which they are working or be willing to be vaccinated at the cost of the Institute.
