Coordinator of Bands

We are preferably seeking a suitably qualified, committed and highly competent music educator (preferably a brass expert), to fulfil the ongoing Full-time position of Coordinator of Bands commencing 08 July, 2024. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Educator/Teacher and will have a passion for music, playing a crucial role in shaping the future of music education and inspiring the next generation of musicians.
The role of Coordinator of Bands involves teaching, directing ensembles, and communicating with staff within their specific area, as well as the whole Music Department and Creative Industries academic staff throughout the College.
Responsibilities may Include;
Teaching:
- Teach instrumental students from beginner to advanced levels, ensuring that they have appropriate and well-balanced programs of study, including preparing students for recitals, concerts, competitions, masterclasses, examinations (e.g. AMEB and Curriculum Music) and tertiary entrance auditions.
- Direct cocurricular ensembles and plan appropriate repertoire for each ensemble.
Program Development:
- Proactively work to develop the profile of the band program and increase the numbers of quality bands students at the College;
- In conjunction with the Director of Performing Arts, develop and manage the Year 5 band immersion program;
- Attend school music performances and other school events, and assist with the planning of key music events such as workshops, recitals and music camps;
- Establish appropriate goals for the area;
- In consultation with the Director of Performing Arts, prepare and present performance opportunities for bands students;
- Mentor new members of staff within the area;
- Collaborate with the Director of Performing Arts to create an annual plan that is outcomes-based, detailing performance metrics and success measures for the Band Ensembles program;
- Oversee the coordination of before and after school, as well as lunchtime rehearsal programs;
- Conduct annual auditions and provide relevant updated audition materials to ensure appropriate placement of students with tutors and within ensembles;
Resources and Budgeting:
- Assist in preparing the budget for Band-related activities;
- Maintain an accurate inventory of instruments and equipment within the area, including instruments that are hired to students; and ensure that there are sufficient instruments to meet the needs of curriculum, cocurricular and extra-curricular areas in addition to ensuring school instruments are kept in an appropriate condition;
- Ensure that maintenance of instruments is up to date and organise repairs as needed;
- Source ensemble/studio repertoire to maintain and update the sheet-music library.
Key Selection Criteria
- A dynamic understanding of Brass instruments (highly preferred) with proficiency in performance, teaching, and ensemble direction.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, mentor, and guide students, staff, and fellow musicians in the pursuit of musical excellence.
- Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating music programs, with a focus on continuous improvement and growth.
- Desire to engage in a dynamic learning environment acting as an advocate for the music program.
- Enthusiasm for engaging students in meaningful learning experiences.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- A meticulous approach to music administration, including resource management, scheduling, and ensemble coordination.
- Proven ability to maintain high standards of performance in student ensembles and an understanding of the intricacies of performance preparation and execution.
- Excellent communication skills to engage with students, parents, and colleagues, providing timely feedback and maintaining open lines of communication.
- Strong attention to detail & organisational skills.
Essential Qualifications:
- Current Queensland College of Teacher Registration (preferred but not essential)
- Degree/Diploma qualifications relevant to the position
