Correctional Officer (CO) K9

Security Operations Group ( SOG )

  • CO Dog Handler K9 positions

  • Ongoing/ Full-Time Roles

  • Base Salary $70,156 - $83,150 pa plus superannuation, annual leave loading and incidental allowance

Your role

This role provides a high standard of security, assistance and support to Governors, senior management and officers in charge of correctional centres within NSW, while utilising a CSNSW K9, to assist with detection and the maintenance of good order, disciple, safety and the security of correctional centres. This is a rostered role and requires shift and weekend work.

What you'll do

With the Security Operations Group, you and your K9 will play a key role in driving our contraband detection efforts to support the safety and security of our correctional environment.

At SOG you and your K9 will train and work as part of a dedicated and collaborative team. You will join our SOG operations, team up with Immediate Action Teams and frontline officers to support Governors, senior management and officers in charge maintain the good order, discipline, safety and security our correctional centres.

What we're looking for

  • The successful applicant must have Certificate III in Correctional Practice or appropriate and relevant custodial experience.

  • Must be prepared to undertake further training in emergency and security procedures, travel at short notice and may be required to spend extended periods away from their place of residence.

  • All applicants will be required to pass the standard Security Operations Group fitness test prior to progressing to participation in a selection day. Must hold a current driver's licence and have the ability and willingness to drive official vehicles throughout NSW.

  • The successful applicant must have completed or have the ability to successfully complete all requirements of the CSNSW Dog Handlers Course. The successful applicant must be prepared to reside or be willing to relocate within 115 kilometres of the nominated K9 Unit Base and must have a secure yard to house a CSNSW Dog.

  • Applicants will be required to have a residential yard or be prepared to relocate into a residential property that has a yard within a set time frame, if their application is successful. This will be reviewed by the State K9 Manager. A full residential inspection will be conducted at the residence of the successful applicant. Any costs involved with the upgrade of the yard will be the responsibility of the successful applicant. No other dogs other than the departmental dog will be permitted to reside at the residence of the successful handler unless approved by the Senior Assistant Superintendent of the K9 Unit.

Essential Requirements

  • Certificate III in Correctional Practice or appropriate and relevant custodial experience

  • Current driver's licence appropriate to meet all job requirements and ability and willingness to drive official vehicles throughout NSW

  • Pass and maintain the standard Security Operations fitness test

  • Have completed or ability to complete of all requirements of the NSW Corrective Services Dog Handlers Course and able to meet and maintain the standards of an operational CSNSW K9 handler

  • Have completed or the ability to complete the Emergency Response Operators Course (EROC)

  • Capacity and willingness to travel at short notice and to spend extended periods away from own residence
