About the Position
The Court Support Officer works with and under the direction of the Circle Sentencing Courts Coordinator to assist with the administration and coordination of the Circle Sentencing Courts. It is involved in assisting to case manage matters through the Courts and to conduct family conferences. Together with the Coordinator, the position works across the organisation, Department and the community to help develop and implement initiatives aimed at preventing or reducing Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples contact with the justice system. This position does not supervise staff.Duties
Under broad direction of the Circle Sentencing Coordinator:1. Administer proceedings and coordinate activities of the Circle Sentencing Courts by managing referrals, assessments, conferences, check-ins and sentencing sessions.
2. Throughout the Circle Sentencing process, assist with meeting clients’ needs and supporting a solution-focused outcomes by:
a. providing cultural support; and
b. working and liaising with clients’ their family, support service providers, and legal and community representatives.
3. Support the Circle Sentencing Coordinator to liaise with internal and external stakeholders as well as members of the public in relation to Circle Sentencing.
4. Provide advice to ensure the policy and procedures which govern Circle sentencing are culturally safe, gender and trauma informed, and evidence led.
5. Interpret and apply legislation, policy and procedures to provide advice and assistance on Circle Sentencing matters (including to the Judiciary, court staff, members of the legal profession and other court users).
6. Maintain statistics and prepare reports, briefs, ministerial or other correspondence as related to Circle Sentencing.
7. Actively promote, participate, and contribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-specific projects.
8. Assist with coordination of Elders on the Circle Sentencing Elders’ panel.
9. Develop and maintain case files, document and records.
Requirements/Skills
- In depth knowledge of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and issues, priorities and challenges of service delivery in the context of the criminal justice system.
- Demonstrated understanding of trauma informed practices, restorative justice principles, and disability and cultural diversities.
- Demonstrated well-developed ability to interpret and apply legislation, and to provide advice on policy, process or procedural issues.
