Dairy Farm Assistant Manager Position with accommodation.
We are searching for an enthusiastic and motivated person or couple to join our team. We run a 500 cow Dairy Farm calving once a year in June for 10 weeks. We have excellent facilities, a 50 unit rotary with auto ID, auto feed system, milk meters, auto cup removers, auto teat spray and auto draft gate. We run a pasture based system in a high rainfall area joining to sexed semen, followed by beef bulls and rearing all the calves. Therefore, building a beef herd alongside the dairy herd.
About the role: the Assistant Manager will work closely with the farm manager building a relationship of trust and autonomy to oversee and ensure smooth day to day operations on the farm. The key focus area is herd health and milk production so a passion for cows is essential. The applicant must be able to use their own initiative to maintain the farm and daily operations to a high standard.
Key responsibilities are:
- milk harvesting to optimise quality, efficiency and yield and supervises other staff to achieve this.
- identifying and fixing faults in milking plant as needed.
- Maintains hygiene, cleanliness and presentability around dairy.
- Manages and updates herd records
- Monitors, identifies and treats animal health problems.
- Understands fertility and animal husbandry
- Assists in implementing breeding programs, AI skills favourable.
- Safely uses and maintains vehicles on farm
- Feeding livestock using silage wagon and bale feeder.
- Understands pasture production and rotational grazing
- Monitors pasture covers, residuals, feed intakes, stage of lactation and cow condition, and discusses with manager
- Implements a routine maintenance schedule of vehicles, plant, machinery and equipment
- Communicates clearly and openly.
- Fosters a team environment and supports staff to get their best performance
- Supports and trains junior employees in their development
A comfortable 3 bedroom house is available to the successful applicant with school bus stop nearby.
Suitable applicants should have the following
- Minimum of 2 years experience in a senior farm hand role
- Diploma/Degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Vet Science or equivalent industry knowledge
- Initiative
- Attention to detail
- A love of cows and farming
Further training will be required on farm and continued upskilling throughout employment is encouraged.
Position starts 13th of May or earlier by negotiation.
