About the Group

Stategy and Precincts is a group within the Department of Transport and Planning, and is responsible for providing policy direction, planning and innovation leadership for integrated simple, safe connected journey. The Data and Digital Division will maintain continuity of in flight projects and critical functions whilst moving towards greater leverage and coordination of capability.

About the Division

Mobility and Insights is a division in the department under Strategy & Preceints, responsible for the delivery of better outcomes for transport users through developing and coordinating customer and transport system insights, strategy and innovation.

About the Team

The Data Design team within Mobility and Insights are responsible for providing well-designed solutions focused on unlocking the power of Data to enable the Department's future. Technology, process and people change more often than data when truly understood by an organisation. Data Design focuses on solutions for spatial and aspatial.

About the Role


Fixed Term - Full Time - until 31st of December 2025

The Data Designer - Spatial role is a critical role for Mobility and Insights helping to unlock, optimise and utilise the significant investment the Department has made and is continuing to make in its spatial data and geospatial capabilities for the Transport domain.


The role will guide, design, develop and deploy geospatial solutions and create the spatial/aspatial data required to deliver value to the Department across many different domains. The candidate will be comfortable understanding complex geospatial problems and finding practical, innovative, and effective solutions.


The role will be required to collaborate closely with internal teams and stakeholders, and other organisations to ensure the effective delivery of spatial solutions which support the strategic direction and the technology vision.

Seeking a candidate with a demonstrated ability to drive outcomes through initiatives, utilizing data and evidence to inform policy and service design, while also establishing long-term partnerships for stakeholder buy-in. Additionally, the ideal candidate should possess strong leadership capabilities, particularly in strategically positioning geospatial capabilities to meet the evolving needs of the department.


Position Outcomes / Accountabilities

High Quality Service Provision - Has been a contributor to spatial, data and/or analytics team in order to effectively build, manage and support best practice customer-centric and successful data products and services, to enable delivery of enhanced business and customer value and identification and implementation of innovative ways to extract additional value from existing spatial and information assets.
Spatial Literacy - Extensive knowledge and understanding of spatial concepts, capabilities, processes and tools. Using the tools and processes to create and implements spatial solutions. Technical knowledge of geographic concepts, spatial data management, spatial analysis, and data visualisation.
Data Literacy - Considers data volume, variety, velocity, and veracity to establish data collection (e.g. data parameters, data structure) and analysis (e.g. analysis equations, data visualisation) approach; Derives value from data sets to enable immediate and/or future decision making (predictive). May have expertise in formulation basic data models or algorithms.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement - Uses understanding of clients or stakeholders' context to design and implement systems for continuous improvement within team or organisation; Reviews and analyses internal and external information to improve effectiveness and quality of work; Creates team environments where innovation and creativity are fostered and rewarded.


Qualifications and Experience


Mandatory

• A tertiary qualification in information systems, computer science, engineering, geospatial science,
and/or equivalent.
• Demonstrated experience sound knowledge of ESRI Software range, including ArcGIS Pro.
• Experience in developing SQL and scripting languages such as Python.
• Experience in successfully designing, delivering, and developing geospatial solutions.
• Experience in working on data warehouse platforms (e.g. SQL Server, Oracle, Databricks, Teradata)

Desirable

• Experience in working with AWS and/or Azure Cloud.
• Experience in working with CI/CD practices and software (e.g. GIT, Bamboo, Azure DevOps).
