What’s the role?

We are a forward-thinking media organisation with a commitment to integrating the latest technologies in the rapidly evolving field of journalism. With the rise of generative AI and advanced data analytics, we seek to be at the forefront of leveraging these tools for storytelling, reporting, and research.

We are on the hunt for a dynamic Data Journalist with a blend of traditional reporting experience and an interest in the intersection of AI and journalism. The ideal candidate is tech-savvy, possesses a deep understanding of data-driven journalism, and has a keen interest in the transformative potential of AI in the journalistic landscape.

This role can be based in Melbourne,  Sydney or Brisbane.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generate ideas for local data stories that can be scaled across the editorial business for digital and print.

  • Produce compelling stories using data-driven techniques, advanced Excel, and spreadsheet capabilities.

  • Experiment with and implement generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT and Midjourney.

  • Conduct analyses, craft visualizations, and harness Python scripts for journalistic purposes.

  • Stay updated on the latest in AI and journalism, and educate the team about new advancements.

  • Write about the impact, challenges, and potential of AI across all our mastheads.

  • Collaborate with our tech team for possible integrations or improvements in our AI-driven tools.

  • Lead subscription data story initiatives as required and proactively engage editorial stakeholders.

  • Mentor junior journalists in the areas of data journalism and emerging tech trends.

  • Participate in all aspects of the end-to-end production of data stories.

Who are you?
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience in a journalistic role with a solid portfolio of published news stories.
  • Creative, persistent and curious mindset for finding stories in data.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and spreadsheet tools.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of statistics and able to present findings in a digestible format.
  • Beginner to intermediate level skills in Python or a strong willingness to learn.
  • Familiarity with generative AI tools, especially ChatGPT and Midjourney.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and passion for learning in the ever-changing field of journalism.
  • Able to work to tight and demanding deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Knowledge in prompt engineering is a plus.
  • An investigative mindset with a knack for identifying trends in large datasets (Desirable).
  • A strong desire to be at the forefront of tech-driven journalism (Desirable).
