About the role
We are seeking a Database Administrator on a 6 month fixed term contract to be responsible for ensuring the proper functioning and performance of our databases. You will work to design, develop, implement, and maintain database systems, as well as ensure data integrity, security, and availability. Additionally, you will collaborate with our Data & Insights team to understand data needs and optimise database structures to support analytics and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain efficient and reliable database systems, ensuring data accuracy, integrity and security, while meeting performance and availability requirements.
- Analyse and optimize database performance through indexing, query optimization, server configuration and other tuning techniques.
- Install, configure and upgrade database management systems, including but not limited to SQL Server.
- Develop and implement database backup and recovery plans, disaster recovery procedures and high availability solutions.
- Collaborate with the Data & Insights team to design and implement ETL processes, data warehouses, data marts, and other BI-related solutions, ensuring data consistency and accuracy across different systems and platforms.
- Manage database security, including access control, authentication, encryption, and auditing, in compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
- Develop and maintain database-related scripts, procedures, and documentation, including database schemas, data dictionaries, and technical manuals.
- Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues, working with other teams and vendors as necessary to ensure timely and effective resolution.
- Monitor and report on database health, usage, and capacity, using tools such as monitoring software, dashboards, and reports, and proactively identify and address potential issues.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies in database management, data warehousing, business intelligence, and related fields, and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
You'll need experience in:
- Database management systems (DBMS) and related tools, such as SQL Server and MongoDB.
- Data modelling, database design, and database programming
- Database administration tasks such as backup and recovery, performance tuning, and security management
- Ensuring security and compliance with relevant regulations and best practices
- Database performance monitoring and optimisation tools
- ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and tools.
- Knowledge of Business Intelligence (BI) concepts and tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or QlikView
- Familiarity with data warehousing and data mining concepts and technologies
- Cloud-based databases such as AWS RDS or Azure SQL Database
- Understanding of software development and testing methodologies
- Ability to write SQL queries and stored procedures.
