Empower students for life
Carson Street School is seeking to appoint a passionate and committed Deputy Principal to join our leadership team and provide educational guidance in a diverse and physically challenging environment. As an education support school, we provide specialist programs and support for primary aged students requiring the highest levels of educational adjustment. Our students have moderate, severe or profound intellectual disabilities or are diagnosed with severe autism.
Many students have comorbid medical conditions with complex diagnosis and/or physical disability, sensory impairments and behavioural difficulties. All have communication difficulties; most have severe speech and language problems. Assistive technologies and extensive adult assistance are used to support the implementation of highly individualised curricula and daily living requirements.
As a Deputy Principal, you would play a critical role in leading and managing the school; and will be responsible for a range of tasks and duties. The ideal applicant will work closely with the Principal and the leadership team to provide educational leadership in the school and the community. This involves helping to develop and promote the school's values, ethos and priorities; assisting the student services team and encouraging staff, volunteers, and others to share ownership of the school's vision and goals.
The successful applicant will ideally use effective change management strategies to assist the school community to accept and develop opportunities for improved service. This means keeping up-to-date with educational research and trends, and using this knowledge to drive improvement and innovation within the school. A working knowledge of the
Early Years Learning Framework, Applied Behaviour Analysis, Discrete Trial, Conductive Education and Positive Behaviour Support will be advantageous along with a thorough understanding of how to use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), including Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) and other communication devices for students with complex communication needs.
In collaboration with the Principal and other members of the leadership team, you would also be responsible for establishing and maintaining systems, policies, and procedures to ensure that the school is operating effectively and efficiently. This includes contributing to the development of the School Plan through participative decision-making, and using your professional knowledge and understanding to promote teaching and learning within the school community.
Carson Street is focused upon meeting the individual needs of every student. The planning, monitoring and assessment cycle for our students using Individual Education Plans and high-quality teaching and learning programs ensure we maximise student outcomes. We aim at providing a happy, safe and caring environment for students and staff alongside high expectations for student learning.
The ability to work as part of the school’s multi-disciplinary workforce whilst meeting the needs of a diverse student population in an inclusive manner would be key to successfully performing this role.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy.
