This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 2, 2024

Merredin College is seeking to appoint a dynamic Deputy Principal with exceptional interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively across Year K-6 with students, staff, parents, and carers.

  • Attraction and Retention Incentive of $7,000 (see info below)

Teachers and school administrators employed at Merredin College in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $7,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure).  Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year.  Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.

The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

About the position

The applicant will be committed to the school's vision and core values of Achievement, Excellence, Respect and Equity. Crucial to the role is the ability to maintain a positive school ethos such that students and staff feel valued and connected and which builds confidence in the wider community. The role of the Deputy Principal will be to develop an environment which is conductive to quality teaching and learning. 

The successful applicant will be part of our committed leadership and pastoral care team working closely with our Secondary Student Services Deputy to develop whole school approaches across K-12.  The role will include operational and management responsibilities such as refining policy and procedures related to the management of student behaviour, attendance, duty of care, Aboriginal education, and pastoral care at Merredin College. The successful applicant will have high levels of classroom management skills and will strengthen partnerships through parent and community liaison.

A key aspect of the role is maximising support for all students, especially students exhibiting challenging behaviours, and those who are at risk due to poor attendance. They will lead the staff in catering for student with special educational needs and a good understanding of trauma-based practice is essential. They will promote our PBS values and drive our positive behaviour programs. They will tap into the experience of the Student Services team and interagency organisations for the benefit of students.  The Deputy Principal will place the welfare of students at the centre of all decisions and will have a good understanding of departmental policy with respect to attendance and behaviour.

The Deputy Principal will work with the Secondary Student Services Deputy to drive the school’s focus on regular school attendance and put in place initiatives to maximise student attendance. They will collaborate with members of the Leadership team to provide a consistent approach to behaviour and attendance across the school. They will work closely with the Aboriginal Education team to close the attendance gap for Aboriginal students and promote the Cultural Standards Framework.

The successful applicant will have strong leadership skills and knowledge and a willingness to take on significant levels of responsibility. They will place a focus on supporting and monitoring teaching and learning through effective performance management processes. This will include the provision of critical feedback so that the quality of teaching at Merredin College is enhanced. The position includes the management of the key curriculum area of Literacy and the successful applicant should be able to display an excellent understanding of best practice in teaching literacy across K-6 and the ability to work with staff to implement change for improvement.

The Deputy Principal will need to have a strong school improvement focus, working with the leadership team to analyse relevant data, identify strategies for improvement and drive implementation with staff. Experience in Visible Learning is highly regarded as the College is in its third year of implementation. They will have the skills to work with staff to develop a whole school approach to improving mental health and well-being for staff and students and will be a team player and prepared to work to support all the Merredin College priorities.

Merredin College is a K-12 school which is approximately 260 kilometres from Perth. The College expects an enrolment of approximately 560 primary and secondary students in 2024. Merredin College is proud to provide a quality education for students from K to 12 where learning is close to home.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements

 Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
