This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 3, 2024

Girrawheen Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to appoint a strategic, innovative and motivated Deputy Principal to join our friendly and supportive team as they shape the educational future of our students.

The successful applicant will ideally work collaboratively with the Principal and administration team to drive a culture of continuous school improvement. They will ideally possess excellent communication skills, capacity to develop positive relationships with parents, staff, community organisations and agencies.

Applicants should have experience in successfully improving efficiency and operations in managing and monitoring conditions for learning and wellbeing of staff and students in Year 7 - 9. A strong understanding of whole school improvement managing student needs within the Multi-Tiered System of Support Framework is highly regarded for this role.

This role includes managing transition and enrolment processes, engaging supports and interventions for student learning and having ongoing communications with parents and carers, education assistants, teachers, middle leaders, and primary schools. They should line manage the Learning Support Coordinator and Education Assistants to provide support for students with disabilities; and work with School Psychologists to improve well-being, diagnoses, learning & academic progress of students at risk.

A strong focus of the role will be to lead whole school Teaching and Learning within current strategic and operational planning. This role is suited to a high performing secondary leader who has a strong track record in managing change in developing a culture of reflection, collaboration, and feedback to ensure full engagement of students in learning. Ensuring the school’s explicit instructional framework is being delivered with consistency across classrooms will require you to coach staff and mentor middle leaders and teachers to improve student outcomes. Experience in leading whole school Literacy and Numeracy strategies would also be advantageous.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements

 Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
