INFORMATION STATEMENT FOR APPLICANTS FOR THE POSITION OF DIOCESAN DIRECTOR OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION, DIOCESE OF ROCKHAMPTON
The Bishop of Rockhampton, the Most Rev Michael McCarthy, invites applications from suitably qualified applicants for the position of Diocesan Director of Catholic Education from July 2024.
THE DIOCESE OF ROCKHAMPTON
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton was established in 1882. It is located in Central Queensland, covering an area of 414,400 square kilometres from Bundaberg in the south to Mackay in the north and west to the Northern Territory border. The Roman Catholic Trust Corporation for the Diocese of Rockhampton (RCTC) is the civil legal entity under which the Diocese and all its ministries and parishes operate.
The Diocesan Offices, based at 170 William Street, Rockhampton QLD 4700, are headed by the Bishop of Rockhampton and encompass ministry activities, administration, corporate services, and the practise and propagation of the Catholic faith.
There are 30 parishes in the Diocese, each of which conduct their own ministry activities, administration, and practise and propagation of the Catholic faith. Details of each parish can be viewed here:
CATHOLIC EDUCATION IN THE DIOCESE
Catholic EducationDiocese of Rockhampton (CEDR) has its head office at 143 West Street, Rockhampton, and employs approximately 3,500 employees. It operates Catholic kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and Outside School Hours Care services across the Diocese, as well as providing faith education for adults and children in state schools. CEDR educates approximately 18,200 students in its:

  • 31 primary schools
  • 8 colleges
  • 10 kindergartens, and
  • 19 Outside Schools Hours Care services
The Diocesan Education Council assists the Bishop in his determination of educational policies for the Diocese. It is charged with setting educational priorities for the Diocese in the light of the Gospel message to the modern world.
In collaboration with the Bishop, the Education Council establishes the broad direction for Catholic Education and faith formation. Operating within the general pastoral and educational goals of the Diocese, the Education Council enables the Catholic education vision and identity to take shape by delivering and monitoring educational policies consistent with the Diocesan educational mission statement. The Education Council is serviced and supported by the Catholic Education Office and its executive arm.

THE ROLE
The Bishop delegates leadership, administration and management of Catholic Education and Faith Formation to the Diocesan Director of Catholic Education. This responsibility is exercised across three specific areas:
  • Catholic schools and colleges
  • Adult faith education and formation for staff
  • Religious instruction in state schools
In accordance with diocesan guidelines approved by the Bishop, the Diocesan Director of Catholic Education appoints leaders with responsibility for these three ministries.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Applicants should be able to provide evidence of:
  • A personal commitment to the Catholic faith and active participation and involvement in the life of the Church and a Parish;
  • Successful senior leadership experience in Catholic education, preferably at system level;
  • Tertiary qualifications in education or a relevant field, plus further postgraduate qualifications in leadership, management, theology or related fields.
  • High level interpersonal skills;
  • Successful strategic planning and change management experience;
  • A current valid Blue Card under the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 (WWC Act) and valid Suitability Notice is a requirement of the position or eligibility to obtain a valid Blue Card.
  • Initiation of a current National Criminal History Check (

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • A five-year initial appointment, annual performance reviews, with the possibility of renewal of appointment subject to a successful summative performance review early in the fifth year
  • A salary package (total employment cost) including superannuation and a contribution for private motor vehicle use in accordance with the Queensland Bishops’ Senior Executive Scale Level 3
  • Provision of a vehicle for work and private use in accordance with the Diocesan policy
  • Reasonable relocation expenses
  • Completion of a National Criminal History Check and verification of qualifications.
