The Opportunity:
The Diocesan Environment Officer (DEO) in collaboration with the Anglican EcoCare Committee will meet the objectives of the Environmental Policy of the Anglican Diocese. Responding to the Anglican Communion’s Five Marks of Mission; “to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth” the DEO will develop and deliver initiatives that inspire, encourage and support individuals, churches, schools and our communities to cherish creation.
The role will develop an ecoSpirituality and promote it within our Parishes and agencies. It will empower our Parishes to commit to a Net Zero by 2040 and develop creation themed liturgical resources for the various expressions of Anglican worship.

Role & Responsibilities:
- To be an informed and knowledgeable advocate and champion for environmental issues across the Diocese
- Provide awareness, education and training to the Diocese on issues of climate change and climate care
- Responsible for the development of an Eco Spirituality within the Diocese and actively promote it within our parishes and agencies
- Work collaboratively with colleagues on projects and initiatives where net zero carbon and environmental overlap including grant applications
- Represent the Diocese at networking opportunities, meetings and conferences when required
- Effectively engage Parishes on environmental issues including written communications, website updates, delivering talks and organizing events
- Support the development and delivery of a plan to achieve Net Zero Carbon in the Diocese
- Develop and maintain a record of the environmental activity of churches in the Diocese
- Assist in the development of prayer, worship and other resources for church communities and groups
- Collate and accurately interpret, analyse and present data to key stakeholders
- Participate in Climate Pastoral Care courses as required and deliver learnings with clergy and agencies
About you?
Essential:
- Tertiary qualifications in Theology and/or Environmental Science or similar
- Current drivers licence
- A current Working with Children check (with clearance to work with children)
- National Police Check (Newcastle Anglican will consider the relevance of any reported outcomes).
Desirable:
- Knowledge of the Anglican church including Five Marks of Mission
- Confidence in working with and developing prayer, worship and biblical resources on issues of creation care for parishes
Experience:
- Proven experience of successfully organizing, leading and developing projects that seek to bring about change in culture and behaviour
- Proven experience of working on issues relating to creation care, climate & environment
- A personal passion for environmental issues and knowledge of current environmental debates and challenges
- Strong IT skills including knowledge of Microsoft suite (outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends
- Ability to engage with a diverse range of people
- High attention to detail, accuracy and thoroughness in all aspects of the role
