Legislation Section in the Security Law and Policy Branch is responsible for a range of national security laws and policies, including counter-terrorism offences and associated police powers, and legislative regimes for managing high-risk terrorist offenders due to be released from prison. The Section supports the Attorney-General to lead responses on national security issues to ensure policy and legal frameworks are appropriate in light of the threat environment and respect the rule of law. Recent projects have included leading reforms to prohibit the display of Nazi symbols and sharing of violent extremist material.The Section is looking for a Director to lead the Counter-Terrorism
Legislation Section to deliver on a range of legal and policy issues related to national security priorities.The successful applicant will be expected to:
- prepare advice on complex legal and policy issues
- deliver on legislative projects, often in short time frames
- produce high-quality briefs, correspondence, other documents often in high pressure environments
- ensure AGD's equities are represented and considered in interdepartmental and intergovernmental work
- keep departmental colleagues informed on key developments, and
- proactively consult and engage with stakeholders to drive progress on tasks.
