The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Director (
Deputy Decision Maker) - Assessment (FAS) to provide a critical role within Victims of Crime Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS)This is a prioritised role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, who will be given priority consideration as per the special measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.About the Business UnitThe FAS is a landmark reform that will replace the judicially based Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal with a simple and easy to navigate administrative process. The FAS is highly anticipated by victims and stakeholders and represents a major leap forward in the government's response to victims of crime.The FAS will provide financial assistance through a fair, sensitive, and responsive to victims' needs scheme. It will acknowledge the harm done and be trauma informed, inclusive, and culturally safe.
About the RoleReporting to the CEO (Scheme
Decision Maker) you will be responsible for the end-to-end management of all financial assistance application assessments, victim recognition statements and victim recognition meetings. You will champion inclusion and support the CEO in the effective and efficient running of the FAS organisation. You will oversee family violence and cultural safety practice so that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims are supported throughout the application process. You will have demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, and previous experience working with Aboriginal people.
Some of your duties will include:- Managing the end-to-end main FAS decision making assessment unit.
- Driving a victim-centred and culturally safe victim recognition function, to deliver appropriate acknowledgement for victims.
- Leading a diverse, multidisciplinary team to deliver an inclusive, trauma informed and victim focused service.

About youTo be successful in this role, you will have:Technical Expertise- Excellent knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society and understanding of historical and contemporary issues relating to Aboriginal Victorians with demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal communities and advisory groups, including sophisticated and culturally aware stakeholder engagement.
- Significant experience in leading teams undertaking complex decision-making responsibilities in a social justice or legal environment.
- Proven ability to collaborate and influence by motivating others to deliver on organisational goals, objectives, and operational plans.
- Demonstrated understanding of victim issues including in depth knowledge of the nature and dynamics of family violence and sexual assault and the systemic barriers faced by marginalised communities in the justice system.
Qualifications- A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in fields related to community and social services, social policy, social work, law or public administration and minimum of 5 years' experience overseeing delivery of a complex function/s in a service sector environment is required.
