Job description

The Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency (ANZPAA) is a joint initiative of the Australian and New Zealand Police Commissioners, hosted by Victoria Police. ANZPAA works in collaboration with the Australian and New Zealand police jurisdictions and key partner agencies to develop, promote and advise on current policing priorities to position policing for the future.

The National Institute of Forensic Science (NIFS) is a team that sits within ANZPAA. The NIFS team addresses priority needs and issues in forensic science to promote and facilitate excellence. The team is the central contact point for requests requiring forensic representation from Australia and New Zealand.

The Director, NIFS reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ANZPAA and forms part of the ANZPAA Executive Leadership Team. The Director manages the NIFS team of circa seven staff, the work program and stakeholder groups including the Australia New Zealand Forensic Executive Committee (ANZFEC). As a leader, the Director is accountable for ensuring ANZPAA/NIFS delivers agency requirements within budget, implements strategies, and works within a strong governance framework.

Duties include:

  • Provide active strategic leadership to support and advise the CEO in the delivery of the ANZPAA /NIFS Strategy and outcomes expected of the agency.
  • Deliver high value outcomes and outputs in line with the endorsed Business Plans.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify and address emerging issues, trends and risks for forensic science in support of policing in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Work collaboratively within the Executive Leadership Team while providing high quality direction and support to the ANZPAA/NIFS team to ensure the achievement of results and outcomes to member agencies.

As the successful applicant, you will bring:

  • A proven track record of achievement at an executive level, addressing complex issues in the policing/forensic science environment.
  • Strong political acumen and awareness of emerging issues challenging policing.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining high-trust relationships with multiple and diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience in people management and achieving results through developing and supporting a high performing team.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification is mandatory.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or New Zealand Citizen (who have unrestricted rights to employment in Australia) and be able to obtain and maintain a baseline security clearance.
  • The preferred candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment security checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • Candidates may be required to undertake psychometric testing. 
  • Interviews are expected to take place in late July 2024.
