The RMH began in 1848 as Victoria’s first public hospital. Today, it is one of the largest health providers in the state, delivering a comprehensive range of specialist medical, surgical, and mental health services as well as rehabilitation, aged care, outpatient and community programs.
The Gastroenterology department at RMH encompasses a multidisciplinary team, providing expert clinical care to patients in all areas of Gastroenterology. This includes but is not limited to inflammatory bowel diseases, malignancies, hepatology, and endoscopy services. The team works closely with nutritional services, and colorectal surgical services.
The gastroenterology department works closely with the Melbourne Medical School and is active in clinical research, with studies ranging from quality audits to investigator-initiated studies and large multisite externally funded clinical trials. The Melbourne Medical School (MMS) has a substantial international reputation for its leadership in teaching and training, health research, policy and practice. It comprises 13 clinical departments and has more than 1000 academic and professional staff, based either at The University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus or embedded within clinical health services throughout metropolitan Melbourne and rural Victoria.
The Role
The Director of Gastroenterology will provide exceptional leadership in the delivery of patient-focused care within the Gastroenterology Department and will demonstrate a commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, quality improvement, research and education.
The Director will promote productive and collaborative relationships between key stakeholders, internal and external to the RMH. They are accountable for the delivery of high-quality, cost effective, clinical services, education and research, while optimising patient access and ensuring integrated, high quality, multidisciplinary health care is delivered across their department.
As a senior leader, the Director contributes to the overall leadership and management of The Royal Melbourne Hospital, demonstrating the values of the Melbourne Way and Speaking up for Safety to ensure a safe working environment for all staff.
For suitable applicants, this position will be linked to a complimentary University of Melbourne appointment, through the Melbourne Medical School, at Professorial (Level D/E) level, providing access to research infrastructure and funding opportunities.
We are seeking interest from clinical gastroenterology leaders, who have the capacity to harness and develop capability at all levels of the department and set expectations around performance and standards of excellence. Candidates will have extensive experience in public health and the tertiary hospital environment. The ability to think strategically and achieve organisational wide objectives along with the ability to influence and lead change initiatives, are essential.
