Job description

Do you love working with high-needs clients? Are you fun as well as detail-oriented when it comes to providing highest-quality care? Then we want you!

Disability Support Worker for complex-needs client in Berwick.

We are currently seeking 2-3 skilled, personable team members with nursing quals/studying (or much experience with complex clients) to work with our wonderful client in Berwick. We have a great team of 11 people, but some have to leave us and we need to hire again.

Living independently (with a family member), our client is an intelligent, friendly and well-liked man who is a quadriplegic (cerebral palsy), is blind and doesn't speak. He needs people skilled in 24/7 complex care as he is now healthy but still recovering from spending many months in hospital and is vulnerable to more ill health. He requires thickened foods, extra care with swallowing and management of his epilepsy (1-2 seizures per month) and chronic back pain.

He is a bright, happy guy with many hobbies and interests (no “behaviours of concern”) and his current team are valued, upbeat people who will welcome you and teach you the specifics of his care (minimum 5-6 shadow-shifts). We are offering regular, long shifts (casual or permanent), paid training sessions and a wonderful company to work for, in exchange for a willingness to learn his specific needs and be a reliable, safety-driven and fun Support Worker.

We are looking for a variety of shifts to be filled, but particularly active overnights (generally 9.15pm – 7.15am), evening shifts (4.30pm – 9.30pm) and some week and weekend day shifts.

Duties:

• All aspects of personal care - hand feeding, changing pads, bed baths/showering, dressing, toileting etc.

• Full hoist-transfer manual handling - ceiling-hoist used to lift into wheelchair, commode etc.

• Encouraging and supporting personal skills through hobbies, interests and board-games. (Lots of reading, boardgames, space docos, Harry Potter, Star Wars and Big Bang Theory!)

• Accompanying him into the community - to theatre shows, doctors’ appointments, cafes, church etc. (Wheelchair-taxi transport)

• Administering medications - (including oxygen) which often need to be modified (crushed or thickened) for his consumption.

• While 2 people are rostered on each morning, you must be comfortable completing other shifts, and the occasional hoist transfer, on your own. (He only weighs 43kg so this is generally not an issue)

• Taking general observations - EG: oxygen and pulse levels, BP and respiration rate when required.

• To support a person-centered approach. Choice is everything to us, as is his control over his surroundings, activities, clothing, food selection etc

• Willingness to learn and implement his different protocols and follow his daily routines – EG: Epilepsy plan, asthma plan, pain protocols, anxiety process, communication book techniques etc

• Domestic duties - such as food preparation, keeping the kitchen clean, doing bed linen changes and laundry. (A house cleaner does all main cleaning, and most meals are pre-prepared for you)

• We are still being covid-safe, so we take daily temperature, wear N95 masks and take weekly RATs (provided)

• Our client has a pet dog (medium size and does not shed hair) who is sweet and much loved, but who does bark at the front door.

Required skills:

1. Be a great team player with an excellent work ethic and willing to learn our client’s specific needs.

2. Have either nursing training or be studying this area, or have significant aged-care/disability experience

3. We love hiring people from other cultures, especially if they have excellent conversational and written English skills and are familiar with the Australian way of life.

4. Experience (not just training) in manual handling, including the use of hoist/sling transfers, showering/toileting someone in a commode and changing pads.

5. Have less than a 45min travel time to Berwick (near Eden Rise shopping center).

6. Have each of the below certificates (or be able to have them prior to starting)

All applicants must have prior to employment:

• A current First Aid Certificate (which must be maintained at own expense)

• A NDIS Worker Screening Check

• Completion of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards online worker training modules

• Medication management, medication administration and manual handling training.
