About the Organisation

As a program of Upper Murray Family Care, the Hume Riverina Community Legal Service is a non-government, community-managed program offering a range of quality services that are responsive to the varying needs of communities extending from the cities of Albury, Wodonga, Wangaratta and Benalla to townships throughout the Towong, Mansfield, Alpine, Indigo shires, as well as 10 additional LGA's through the Southern Riverina of NSW.

By providing information, support and advocacy, we seek to empower individuals and community groups and contribute to a balanced, just and ethical society.

We now have an incredibly rewarding opportunity for a skilled Lawyer to join a compassionate team of professionals who are dedicated to supporting individuals and who want to make a difference in the lives of people.

Be Rewarded

In addition to an attractive salary ranging from $93,860 - $98,108 pro-rata, the successful candidate will receive the opportunity to join a growing organisation making a meaningful impact on the lives of locals.

There are also a range of generous additional benefits, including:

  • Relocation assistance available to help you move to this picturesque region
  • Flexible work arrangements available
  • 3 days paid leave between Christmas and New Year
  • An additional week of pro rata Leave for all employees
  • Workplace culture that prioritises a healthy work/life balance and mental health: EAP available as well as the option to access private clinical sessions
  • A fantastic work environment and company culture that includes team lunches and wellbeing events

Your Next Opportunity

This opportunity will see you providing holistic legal assistance to people within the flood affected areas in North East Victoria as well as providing Community Legal education, undertaking community development and law reform/advocacy, as required

Reporting to the Senior Lawyer and in conjunction with the Disaster Discovery Team, you will:

  • provide support to other Community Legal centres and service providers
  • provide high quality generalist legal advice, assistance, duty lawyer services, ongoing casework, information and referrals to clients affected by the regional disasters
  • work in partnership with local service providers to deliver joined up and targeted, efficient and effective legal assistance services, including on outreach in Myrtleford, Mt Beauty and Corryong and other affected areas as required.
  • deliver both legal and non-Legal Services to flood affected people through the provision of secondary consultations, legal education/professional development and other partnership activities.
  • provide high quality family violence duty lawyer services to clients by attending the Magistrates Court of Victoria as rostered and provide both pre and post-court advice and assistance.

What You'll Bring to the Team

To be considered for this role, you will need to hold tertiary legal qualifications and be eligible for a practising certificate in Victoria. You will draw on your experience in advice and casework in the areas of family and generalist civil law (e.g. tenancy, fines, consumer, credit and debt, insurance etc) as well as family law and family violence (preferable, otherwise ability to quickly learn essential).

Critical to your success in this position will also be the ability to work collaboratively and to communicate effectively with ‘at risk' service users with complex needs. As many of our clients may have experienced past trauma and/or suffer from poor mental health and other vulnerabilities, a warm demeanour and the ability to practice empathy in a trauma informed way will be paramount.

Other requirements include:

  • A satisfactory Victorian and NSW Working with Children Check
  • A satisfactory Police Check
  • Current driver's license

About the Area

Albury and Wodonga are large regional towns situated on either side of the mighty Murray River. An easy three-hour drive north of Melbourne, you will be working and living near the snow-covered peaks of Falls Creek and Mount Hotham, boutique wineries and breweries, and the goldrush villages of Beechworth and Yackandandah. Connected by the Albury regional airport and the Hume Highway, Albury and Wodonga have vibrant food and arts scenes, high-quality housing, and great sporting and cultural facilities.
