About Cullunghutti

Cullunghutti Aboriginal Child and Family Centre prides itself on being a place of belonging for all children, their families, and the Shoalhaven community. Our centre is dedicated to all Elders, past and present, for their valuable knowledge, wisdom, and loving care passed on to our Boori’s and their families, as well as the community.

Cullunghutti is a culturally safe special place for children and families and staff to connect, grow, and learn together, reflecting and strengthening Aboriginal identity within the wider community. It brings together a range of Early Childhood, health, and family support services to improve education, health, wellbeing, and quality of life for Aboriginal children and families, and helps them learn and grow to become the future leaders of our community.

Cullunghutti Aboriginal Child and Family Centre was established under the Indigenous Early Childhood Development National Partnership Agreement (IECDNP), as a Closing the Gap initiative. We are a not-for-profit organisation, and self-managed by our Aboriginal community.

About the program:

Boori Milumba is a partnership initiative between, Cullunghutti Aboriginal Child and Family Centre, SNAICC, The Parkville Institute and Social Ventures Australia (SVA) to co-develop, trial and evaluate an evidence informed intensive Early Childhood education and care (ECEC) program, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

The development of the ECEC program model will be a community led design process that will bring together community knowledge and practice, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and wisdom, and relevant insights and learnings from an intensive Early Childhood education and care program that was trialed in Victoria. It will research the impact of Aboriginal led, high quality Early Childhood education and care to improve Early Childhood education for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families nationally. This is an Australian designed centre-based early education and care model that supports children and families living with significant social disadvantage and family stress so that children can enter school as confident and successful learners, developmentally on par with their peers. It is a multi-disciplinary model that offers high quality early education and care, infant mental health and family support, in partnership with families and local community organisations and agencies.

Cullunghutti Early Learning Centre was selected as the site for this exciting program. The results from previous trials have found that children who participated in an intensive early education and care program had significant improvement in their cognitive (IQ and language) and non-cognitive skills (resilience and social –emotional). The University of Melbourne research team undertook a rigorous evaluation and some members have established Parkville Institute to continue the work.
