The Biodiversity Conservation Trust’s (the Trust) Central West/Western Region is currently seeking to appoint an Ecologist to undertake ecological assessments and monitoring of Private Land Conservation (PLC) agreements, including providing technical advice to landholders. You will join a dedicated and highly regarded team operating across a large and biodiverse region. About the roleThis is a physically active role suited to people who are fit, enjoy working outdoors with landholders and as part of a team, to contribute toward the BCT’s vision of improving and maintaining biodiversity across NSW through private landholders. This role includes a combination of office-based and field-based work and may on occasion include travelling to and working in remote areas.
To be successful in this role, you will:- Have proven ability to conduct field-based vegetation assessments
- Have the capacity to work collaboratively with a geographical dispersed team.
- Have proven ability to populate, manage and update corporate databases with information about ecology, vegetation types, and native flora and fauna
- Have the capacity to use spatial tools and software to enter spatial information, interoperate map products and produce field maps products for conducting ecological assessments.
- Contribute ecological knowledge to assist landholders develop and/or deliver management plans for Conservation Agreements.
Essential Requirements- A degree in a relevant ecological or environmental science discipline.
- Demonstrated experience undertaking site assessment of biodiversity values, with an emphasis on native vegetation.
- Experience should be consistent with the requirements for accreditation as an assessor using the Biodiversity Assessment Methodology.
- A valid Australian Class C driver’s licence and willingness to travel.
Who we areThe New South Wales Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) is a not-for-profit statutory body, established under Part 10 of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and managed by a Board appointed by the Minister for the Environment.The Trust’s roles are to support and encourage landholders to enter into agreements to conserve and protect biodiversity on private land, guided by the government’s Biodiversity Conservation Investment Strategy; secure biodiversity offsets when developers choose to pay into the Biodiversity Conservation Fund; and other activities that promote greater awareness of, appreciation and understanding of, biodiversity and the importance of conserving it.We acknowledge the ongoing custodial responsibilities of the Aboriginal peoples of NSW to care for Country and are committed to establishing meaningful partnerships with Aboriginal peoples in the management of the environment.Participation in the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme (BOS) and the BCT’s private land conservation (PLC) programsAll new employees with an existing defined interest in the BOS will be required to disclose their personal (or a close family member’s) participation to ensure potential conflicts are managed appropriately. In some circumstances this may require divestment of the interest.The BCT also has restrictions on staff participation in its funded PLC programs.
