Appointment Pool

Broome Primary School is seeking to establish a pool of Education AssistantsSpecial Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2025.

About the position

As an Education AssistantSpecial Needs, you will ideally use your excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with teachers and other colleagues to create an inclusive education program that accommodates the needs of students. The suitable applicants will use initiative to support the delivery of planned education programs, using their understanding of differentiation and intervention strategies to assist students in accessing the curriculum.

Experience in literacy support and explicit instruction is ideal.

Suitable applicants will deliver individual and small group programs throughout the school in order to cater for the educational needs of students. This may include the use of digital technologies or physical materials. Under teacher direction, the Education Assistant – Special

Needs will make use of innovative and unique strategies that promote inquiry learning, critical thinking, creativity, and personal commitment. Experience in supporting the delivery of a differentiated and engaging curriculum will be well regarded. Further, as part of this role, suitable applicants will assist with the general health and wellbeing of students.

About the school

Broome PS was established in 1901 and is the oldest school in the district. The school boasts a proud history and values the buildings, surroundings, and the achievements of its past and present students. Broome PS is established on Yawuru land and embraces the rich Aboriginal culture, along with the historical and diverse multicultural aspects of the Broome community.

Broome PS provides a range of educational opportunities and experiences for approximately 350 students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The school actively promotes a positive and respectful culture.

Programs delivered by staff promote student self-esteem, well-being and the school’s core values of Care, Respect, Pride and Success. The school has adopted the Department of Education's mantra, 'Every Student, Every Classroom, Every Day,' to focus upon high quality education, striving for continuous improvement through the review of student performance information and reflection on evidence based best teaching practice.

It is our belief that it is the quality of the teaching and learning programs that will have the greatest impact upon student performance, to ensure students achieve year on year growth.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with Special Needs, parents, and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check  
  • Complete the Department’s induction program within 3 months of commencement  
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy education.wa.edu.au
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within 6 months of appointment  
  • Complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
