The Role

The Architect and Strategy Branch (ASB) within the newly established Defence Digital Group (DDG) is seeking to recruit multiple EL 2Enterprise Architects to lead the design of Defence’s evolving technology ecosystem.  

ASB provide Digital strategic, technology and architectural blueprinting services spanning the entire Defence Digital landscape supporting outcomes for Defence war-fighters, civilians, leadership, programs, projects and capability owners. We intimately understand, map and direct overall Digital technology ecosystems across Defence and proactively and continuously seek to improve the Digital experience for all ADF, APS and partners to meet the needs of the war-fighter during a time where Digital will be key in providing decision support advantage. 

We are seeking to recruit to positions across the Branch, including Digital Strategy and Roadmaps, Cyber Security Architecture (Security Architecture, Data & Integration Architecture), and Enterprise Architecture (Applications, Infrastructure, Network and C4ISREW ( Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare).

These are leadership positions and you will be a part of designing a forward-looking Digital technology landscape enabling Defence capability to align with strategic intent through modern and reusable technology architecture. You will collaborate closely in line with the DDG operating model to ensure end-to-end technology blueprints that align with the organisation's technology roadmap. Together we defend Australia and its national interests by assuring a secure, survivable, and scalable enterprise ICT architecture.

A robust merit pool will be created as a result of this recruitment activity.

Enterprise Architect roles within the Division are considered a Defence critical APS occupational discipline; therefore, suitable candidates will attract a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP), which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Enterprise Agreement (EA) to some or all of the jobs within a critical occupation(s) or discipline within a workplace. Applicants engaged into a BDCP position must consider the following:

BDCPs provide remuneration in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA). This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review. Should your performance fall beyond requirements or the eligibility criteria not be met, your eligibility for the BDCP may be reviewed and ceased. It may also be ceased should you change positions or the requirement for the BDCP is no longer necessary, as determined by Defence. Should the BDCP be ceased you will be advised and your BDCP additional payment will cease.

Our successful candidates will have exceptional communication skills in order to develop and maintain relationships with a technical workforce, capability managers and project teams. They will exercise a considerable degree of independence, have proven leadership skills within a diverse and integrated workforce of ICT capability-focused professionals and will be accountable for the delivery of complex architecture.  

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience leading a team of ICT capability-focused professionals in a fast-paced, geographically dispersed, maturing, and results-driven environment.
  • A customer-centric and outcomes-oriented mind-set – thinking strategically while also incrementally achieving impacts for Defence.
  • Ability to grasp the unique architecture of the Defence environment and seek ways to improve it.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise IT infrastructure, software platforms and Cloud environments (Azure)
  • Experience proposing high-level architectures and communicating them to solution engineers and business stakeholders.
  • Excellent negotiating and influencing skills, and demonstrated experience working with a range of stakeholders.
  • In addition, we are looking for candidates with growth and leadership mindsets. We need mature, intent-based leadership to build relationships, develop our people, and become trusted advisors.
