This role is responsible for the delivery of data analytics products and services within Defence.
In your role, you will be expected to:
- Lead a large team and use industry best practices on data management, architecture and Analytics to deliver value to the Defence organisation.
- Advise on the development, sustainment and operation of Defence’s strategic data platform.
- Your responsibilities include:
- Delivering data products that highlight the value that can be derived from the Department’s extensive data assets;
- Seeking opportunities to further enrich our data with acquisition of new data sources and improved integration of data assets;
- Maturing the Department’s enterprise Data and information architecture practice;
- Experimenting and developing state-of-the-art techniques in Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to deliver decision advantage.
Remuneration & Regression
This is an on-going EL 2 position. The expanded EL 2.2 position and higher salary is offered on a temporary basis and is reviewed annually. The annual review is conducted for all EL 2.2 positions across the Department and the salary of the incumbent may be regressed to the substantive EL2 position if;
- There is a change in duties and the work value of the duties decreases below that of an EL 2.2;
- The work associated with the EL2.2 position is no longer required to be performed; or
- The incumbent is reassigned to other duties.
The Data and Analytics Branch is a key area of the Data Division. Data Division drive implementation of the Defence Data Strategy and the realisation of our vision to use data as a strategic asset by valuing it, protecting it and leveraging it for strategic and operational advantage. The Data and Analytics Branch contribute to Defence’s strategic priorities by working with stakeholders across the enterprise to co-design and co-deliver major data projects, platforms, products and insights across a range of use cases.
The Branch trials, adopts and matures new data analytics capabilities to achieve strategic and operational goals for Defence strategic objectives. The Branch comprises of approximately 50 employees within multidisciplinary teams made up of product managers, data architects, data engineers, data analysts, data scientists, and subject matter experts who work together to deliver integrated outcomes for the enterprise.

Our ideal candidate will:
- Be a proven leader who possesses strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills, to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders and support decision-making; this includes the ability to explain complex concepts and risk in plain language.
- Have substantial experience building and managing data analytics teams at scale, and a passion for delivering evidence-based decisions through sophisticated analysis of data.
- Possess a strong understanding of data management, architecture and Analytics best practice; proven records of achievement in analytical skills and advanced research and development would be highly valued.
- Be a pragmatic self-starter with a proven ability to manage competing priorities to a high standard of accuracy within allocated timeframes.
