Your new company
This Federal Government Statutory Authority is taking the lead in managing a water reform program in Australia, that addresses the effects of climate change, community and industry requirements, and access to water for First Nations people. Currently, they are seeking an EL1 Assistant Director.
Your new role
As the Assistant Director, you will be responsible for leading the development of a ten-year Science Strategy. The Assistant Director will contribute to shaping the narrative around the agency’s utilisation of best available science and provide insights to policymakers and practitioners. Responsibilities include understanding the existing science program, identifying future science needs related to policy, and bridging gaps in knowledge. Engagement with diverse audiences, including executives, other agencies, jurisdictions, and research partners, is a key aspect of this role.
Working at the science policy interface, you will utilise technical expertise to deliver customised products for decision-makers. You will provide insights based on best available science, agency research needs, and policy insights. Your duties will include but are not limited to:
Specific duties
- Lead insights and development of briefing material for decision makers on broader science opportunities and science need to meet future water policy
- Lead analysis of the suite of science programs that contribute to water policy and planning with science program managers
- Tailor a Science Strategy product that shows an understanding of the linkages between the science program and policy across the agency, provides clarity for decision makers and outlines opportunities for future funding, collaboration, and partnerships.
- Review science outputs and needs, in collaboration with policy and engagement teams
- Represent and engage with external stakeholders including Commonwealth agencies, jurisdictions, and communities
- Contribute to team leadership in Strategic Science and Partnerships.
- Prepare written material for internal and external audiences
What you'll need to succeed
To succeed in this role, you will be a high-performing individual with demonstrated professional experience working as an EL1. As well as this, you will have:
- Strong communication skills, including oral and written reports, briefs and meeting papers.
- Experience in water policy development and policy analysis.
- Experience managing a small team.
- The ability to work collaboratively and productively in a virtual environment is a must.
- Experience in natural resource management review and policy development processes or tertiary qualifications in a related discipline are desirable but not essential for the role
