Job description

Fiscal Group is seeking Assistant Directors with a background in economic and fiscal analysis, policy development or coordination to fill a range of roles across the Group.

If you are a team player, have an interest in working on key government priorities, building an evidence base for change and providing advice to the Treasurer on a broad range of policy issues, then we want to hear from you.

We offer a supportive team environment with a constant stream of interesting and rewarding work. Flexible work arrangements, including part-time hours can also be considered.

To be a successful candidate for all Assistant Director roles in Fiscal Group, you will:

  • be able to manage projects and lead workstreams, including providing direction to others and building organisational capability;
  • have the ability to navigate the strategic context and anticipate and establish priorities;
  • have excellent communication skills (written and oral) including the ability convey complex information and issues clearly and persuasively and tailor products and style to varied audiences and contexts;
  • nurture constructive relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, both internal and external to the department, and negotiate outcomes in line with organisational objectives;
  • be resilient, flexible, collaborative and have energy and determination to succeed; and
  • be open, accountable and of high integrity.

Policy Roles – Social Policy Division; Labour, Environment, Industry and Infrastructure Division; and Commonwealth, State and Population Division

As an Assistant Director in a policy team in Fiscal Group you will lead analysis of policy issues from a whole-of-economy perspective, understand government priorities and stakeholder interests and respond to quickly changing priorities. Your responsibilities may include: developing Budget products, preparing briefings for Treasury Ministers, developing and communicating accurate advice to Ministers and senior officials on policy proposals, negotiation and stakeholder management.

In addition to the above Fiscal Group attributes, to be an effective Assistant Director in a policy team you will:

  • oversee and undertake analysis and draw conclusions, recognising links between interconnected issues or programs, and an ability to make accurate judgments in a fast-paced environment;
  • lead collaboration across Treasury and with other agencies to develop policy positions and provide sound advice;
  • have a flexible and proactive approach to managing competing priorities; and
  • apply economic and policy frameworks when assessing issues - a good basis in economics is desirable but not essential.

Project Management Roles – Budget Policy Division

In a project management role you will work across the Treasury and engage with other departments to coordinate delivery of budget updates, including setting and monitoring progress against the budget timetable and coordinating the development of budget products. You will play a crucial role in budget delivery as the central point of contact for the Treasurer’s Office and Senior Executive.

In addition to the above Fiscal Group attributes, to be an effective Assistant Director in a coordination role you will:

  • demonstrate excellent organisational skills and have the ability to manage multiple competing priorities;
  • have a demonstrated ability to problem solve and see projects through to completion, monitoring progress, setting milestones and adjusting plans as required;
  • have an enthusiasm and ability to identify and implement improvements in work practices and products;
  • lead collaboration, with demonstrated interpersonal and relationship-management skills; and
  • have data or Microsoft Excel experience.
