Be a tradie in the Navy operating, maintaining, diagnosing and repairing advanced technical and military hardware onboard ships and ashore.
Whether you already have a trade, you're an apprentice, or you have no experience at all, you'll be paid from day one. You'll gain all the skills needed with extensive on-the-job trade training. You may also be able to use your existing qualifications and be eligible for recognition of prior learning.
As an Electronics Technician, you’ll ensure electronic circuits and systems are kept in peak working order, onboard ships and ashore. You’ll be responsible for the performance of satellite and radar systems, missile and gun systems, underwater systems, target tracking and control systems and communication systems.
Electronics Technician do not maintain electrical services. If you are looking for an electrical trade and have an interest in working with electrical power generation or high voltage systems, you may be better suited to employment as a Marine Technician.
Your typical day will see you operating systems and monitoring performance to identify and correct operational faults. You'll conduct maintenance tasks, including routine planned maintenance, attending to breakdown maintenance, and assisting contractors in higher level maintenance.
On completion of your Initial Technical Training you will be streamed into one of four specialisations. Your choice of stream is based on your preference and the availability of the position. These specialisations comprise of Communications, Sensors, Weapons and Fire Control. Depending on your allocation, your duties will include, but are not limited to maintaining:
Communications:
- Internal communication systems (broadcast systems, telephone systems)
- External communication systems (HF, VHF, UHF radios, satellite communications)
Sensors:
- Navigation and long range air search RADAR systems and displays
- Underwater systems (SONAR, torpedo counter measures, underwater telephone)
- Navigation aids (gyro-compasses, inertial navigation systems, GPS)
- Electronic warfare systems (electromagnetic signal interrogation systems)
Weapons:
- Weapon systems (gun, missile and torpedo systems)
- Hydraulic systems
Fire Control:
- Ships combat and fire control systems
- Optical tracking systems
As a sailor, you'll perform additional duties and learn more skills to become highly trained and efficient in supporting the whole ship. This may include ship security, firefighting, boarding party, flood repair, line handling, first aid, flight deck duties, replenishment at sea, medical emergency team member, ammunitioning or ceremonial duties.
