The Western Australia (WA) Electoral Commission is looking for a suitably experienced person to fill the fixed term Full-Time position of Engagement, Education and Communications Manager within our Executive Division (75 hours per fortnight) to 31 December 2025, with the possibility of extension or permanency.

The WA Electoral Commission manages elections events for the State and local governments and non-parliamentary organisations.

Whilst this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other "similar" vacancies that become available at the Commission. In addition to this, should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised vacancy, then the next most suitable applicant may also be selected from this process. Both options remain valid for a period of twelve (12) months from when the authorised delegate endorses the recruitment decision.

What do you do?

A key responsibility of this role will be supporting the implementation of the Commission's 2025 State General Election Communications and Engagement Strategy. The Engagement, Education and Communications Manager (Manager) develops, implements, and monitors strategies and activities to educate the community about electoral processes. This role requires good analytical and problem-solving skills and is expected to use them to counter instances of election misinformation through a mix of proactive engagement about WA's electoral processes and, where appropriate, respond to identified inaccuracies.

Operating as part of the Executive Division, the Manager supports the Electoral Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner to discharge their functions under the Electoral Act 1907. The Division is responsible for all internal and external communications across the Commission, including social media and publications. The Electoral Education Centre also forms part of the division and is responsible for educating students and members of the public about our systems of voting. This position leads, supervises and manages the Electoral Education Centre and staff.

The Manager is expected to build and maintain positive working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders and be able to influence others to adopt desired actions. The role is expected to build and maintain positive working relationships with a wide variety of strategic stakeholders (internal and external) and leaders and be able to influence others to adopt desired actions regarding community engagement strategies.

This position reports to the Deputy Electoral Commissioner and has three full-time positions as direct reports.

Requirements of the position (Selection Criteria):

Essential:

  • Considerable demonstrated experience in leading and managing a strategic communications function and/or relevant degree.
  • Knowledge and experience in developing and implementing community engagement, public awareness programs or diversity and inclusion policies.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in successfully managing and delivering results within time restraints and management of competing priorities demonstrated through successful delivery of relevant projects.
  • Proven ability to communicate with influence, negotiate outcomes and manage complex stakeholder relationships, including across a geographically dispersed network.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and embed change, career development and professionalism.
  • Substantial conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the proven ability to implement, innovative and effective solutions.

Desirable:

  • Tertiary qualification in relevant field
