The role reports to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer and is being offered on a residential or DIDO 8:6 roster.Our pit development team provides guidance related to pit wall scaling, ground support requirements and waste dump management to help mitigate against rockfall and slope stability. Boddington is a mature operation that has been mining it's hard rock resource for over fifteen years. A comprehensive Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) currently exists along with a full array of Standard Operating Procedures for various work activities and controls including Trigger Action Response Plans.The role is responsible for providing geotechnical advice to Technical Services, Production Engineering, and mining Operations, to implement the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP), and ensure compliance to Newmont's Surface Ground Control Standard - Open Pit, and the Western Australian Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022.The role:
- Provide guidance to operations related to pit development initiatives to ensure a safe working environment.
- Conduct daily inspections of active mining areas to identify geotechnical hazards that may exist around the mine.
- Develop practical remedial solutions and provide guidance where applicable to help control geotechnical hazards.
- Liaise with work groups to communicate geotechnical hazards and schedule the implementation of solutions.
- Contribute to evaluating the requirement of changes to design and to work procedures within the Plan Do Act Change cycle.
- Understand and review monitoring data including from slope stability radars, prisms and VWPs and provide relevant guidance to the operation accordingly.
- Collect and interpret QA/QC reconciliation data to help understand performance compared to design related to pit wall geometry and in-pit blasting to help improve wall control.
- Be accountable for the daily adaptation of plans, schedules and Field Works to meet changing conditions that will best achieve overall goals.
- Implement the standards for the Geotechnical and Technical Services Department, and be accountable for the standards being met for all outputs.
- Tertiary qualification in Geotechnical Engineering (Mining), or in Mining Engineering or Geology with mining geomechanical subjects (Bachelor degree or higher).
- Strong organisation, planning, and time management skills, with the ability to work as part of a team, or with minimum supervision.
- A minimum of 2 years operations geotechnical experience preferably in hard rock open pits.
- Self-motivated with a high level of attention to detail and a growth mindset.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Experience using 3D modelling software such as GEM4D, Minesight, Vulcan, Deswick etc.
- Experience using geotechnical software such as Rocscience (Slide/Dips/Swedge), Trajec3D.
