AEMO at the Heart of Energy
We are the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), committed to designing and operating a sustainable energy system that delivers safe, reliable, and affordable electricity and gas. Our mission includes facilitating the transition to a net-zero energy system by 2050, working collaboratively with industry partners to achieve 100% renewable generation capability by 2025. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around Character, Commitment, and Connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant mission in the energy sector.
About the role
AEMO’s System Planning division is focused on the efficient planning of the power system over the medium to long term to ensure system security and reliability requirements are met in the National Electricity Market. System Planning is responsible for the AEMO Integrated System Plan, the 20-year blueprint guiding the future development of the east coast’s power system, as well as the System Strength and Inertia Reports, and the annual Network Support and Control Ancillary Services Review.
As an Engineer in the System Planning division, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring system security and reliability requirements are met while guiding the development of the Australian east coast's power system. The division's work influences major infrastructure investments and supports effective decision-making by industry and government stakeholders.
You will be responsible for providing engineering expertise to assess power system capability. As part of this work, you will quantify emerging system needs and develop solutions that can ensure Australia’s electricity system continues to operate securely and reliably over the coming decades. The work predominantly includes assessment of power system capability and performance using specialised power system analysis techniques and tools, as well as sharing outcomes with external and internal stakeholders.
The System Planning division is a diverse and highly collaborative team of skilled professionals, located all around Australia, who work dynamically across a range of high-profile, group-based projects. This work will provide you with incredible opportunities to collaborate with internal and external experts across multiple technical disciplines, propelling your professional development within the energy sector, and placing you at the forefront of the energy transition with a direct contribution to a sustainable future.
This position is available across multiple locations - Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth & Brisbane with flexible and remote work arrangements available.
What you will be doing
- Perform power system modelling and analysis of the electricity transmission network using computer simulation tools
- Provide technical support and advice on electricity planning and performance issues to ensure information is available for the safe, secure, and reliable operation of the power system
- Contribute to the production of key planning documents (e.g., Integrated System Plan, Electricity Statement of Opportunities, Network Support and Control Ancillary Services Report, System Strength, and Inertia Reports)
- Prepare high quality reports and provide information on a range of planning issues, including capability and performance of the network, to management and project teams
- Contribute to departmental/organisational planning processes, including development of procedures and processes for planning studies and activities
- Undertake stakeholder engagement and support the preparation of advice and proposals for consideration by supervisors and management in relation to network planning matters
- Develop a good knowledge of the electrical transmission network, generation in the NEM and the Gas Market Transmission and Systems
