Job description

The Role

Defence are looking for experienced, Engineers with strong leadership and strategic awareness to fill a variety of engineering roles.

As an EL 2 Engineering Leader, your key duties may include:

  • Accountable for managing and leading a team, such as an Engineering Manager including providing clear and consistent communication, setting clear performance and behavioural standards, managing performance, delegating responsibility and guiding and developing people.
  • Providing Engineering Leadership as a Chief Engineer, Principal Engineer or Engineering Executive and exercising assigned engineering and technical authorities and delegations.
  • High level of stakeholder engagement both within the agency and with industry and external stakeholders whilst utilising engineering and technical management knowledge and expertise, business and operational context to identify issues and uncertainties in acquisition and sustainment of defence capability. 
  • Provide strategic advice to senior management and stakeholders, as well as leading and assuming accountability for very complex work / work programs that have strategic, political, technical complex or operational significance.
  • Exercise a significant degree of independence and is accountable to perform and achieve very complex engineering and project work within an integrated workforce. 

EL 2 Engineering Leaders will require knowledge of and experience of compliance with legislative frameworks, engineering and technical management knowledge, and ability to deliver advancements to established principles, techniques, methods and regulations within the Defence environment. 

Note: Consideration will be given to candidates across Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane (in no specific order).

About our Team

We are recruiting in an exciting time for Defence across a range of positions in Engineering and Technical between three Groups:

  • Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG): CASG exists to meet the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) military equipment and supply requirements, identified by Defence and approved by Government. CASG manages a multi-billion dollar portfolio of complex, high-profile acquisitions and sustainment activities supporting armed forces.
  • Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group (NSSG): NSSG is responsible for delivering and sustaining Australia’s naval capability – the ships and submarines – for Australia to be able to fight and win at sea. 
  • Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Group (GWEO): GWEO’s mission is to deliver an Enterprise with a focus on domestic manufacture, long-range strike and uplifting our war stocks enabling the Australian Defence Force, in competition and conflict.
