About ARTC

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) plays a critical role in the national transport supply chain and in the overall economic development of Australia. Managing and operating more than 8,500 km of track in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland, makes ARTC one of Australia's largest rail network owners.

The Inland Rail Program is a 1600km rail infrastructure project stretching from Brisbane to Melbourne incorporating new and existing rail track. The program includes the upgrading of existing standard gauge track, the enhancement of existing standard gauge track to cater for double stacking and the construction of new standard gauge links comprising of viaducts, tunnels, rail track, crossings and bridges.

The Australian Government is delivering Inland Rail through the Inland Rail Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of ARTC in partnership with the private sector. More information relating to the project can be found here: Inland Rail

About the opportunity
The Engineering Director is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the engineering lifecycle for Queensland through development and up to handover and acceptance, ensuring that delivery teams develop coordinated, buildable, safe, and accepted returned asset within the scheduled timeframes and cost constraint.

Reporting to the Regional Director QLD, the Engineering Director will be a key member of Project leadership in Queensland. This role will also have a functional reporting line to the Executive Director Engineering, Integration and Program Performance ensuring our frameworks and systems are best suited to support delivery of the Inland Rail and to coordinate with other Engineering leaders across the Program of works sharing lessons and best practice. The role will ensure all requirements associated with Engineering and Assurance across the phases of Development, Detailed Design, Construction and Commissioning are fully understood and consistently applied across projects, including ensuring the development and application of the relevant methodologies and procedures.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Managing key Engineering and Assurance risks and ensure solutions meet all stakeholder needs and business requirements within scope, quality, safety, time and cost constraints, as well as regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Operating within an integrated delivery team to provide technical guidance to principal engineers, engineering managers and design managers to support the delivery of multiple rail, civil and structures work packages
  • Providing timely decision making to determine and optimise competing objectives including implementation of strategies that engage and align with all stakeholders, including government representatives, the community, and environmental interests
  • Partnering with the Program Management Office, Commercial and Health, Safety & Environment to drive efficient and effective delivery of all engineering services to the Inland Rail Program

About you

This role is a great opportunity for a passionate individual with strong background in the rail industry. It is key for the incumbent to establish clear leadership with the delivery team, contractors and consultants to ensure the right work is prioritised. It is also key for the incumbent to develop strong relationship with peers and Inland Rail to ensure consistency across the program. Working collaboratively will be key to the success in the role. The successful candidate will demonstrate high levels of both oral and written communication capability which will allow them to lead and direct Project engineering and technical activities, as well as support commercial negotiations efficiently and effectively with contractors, consultants, and advisors.

Additional you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Degree qualification in Engineering and demonstrated high levels of industry experience.
  • Qualification as CPEng, Eng Exec, Fellow Eng / NER / RPEQ, or equivalent.
  • Extensive knowledge and strong leadership skills in engineering design and assurance, preferably in a rail environment.
  • Experience in implementing engineering management frameworks in a major infrastructure-project.
  • Highly developed leadership, negotiation, influencing, analytical, problem resolution, interpersonal and communication skills.
