In ACT public schools, you can teach your specialisation of one or more subjects as a classroom teacher in one of our many high schools. ACT public high schools cater for years 7-10 or, in our larger schools, students from P-10 teaching years 6-10.

Our English, Mathematics or Science teachers benefit from incremental salaries starting from $86,253 for graduate teachersand $102,969 to $121,077 for experienced educators, making a career in public education the right choice for you and the young people you teach.

About you:

As a teacher employed by the ACT Education Directorate, you will be a dynamic, professional, and contemporary educator who will:

  • Have subject expertise and the ability to teach across a broad age and ability range.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment with like-minded educators who have a passion for teaching and their specialisation.
  • Have strong classroom management skills enabling a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Commit to collaborative professional learning and development as an educator.
  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

Eligibility requirements for employment:

To be able to teach within the ACT public education system you must: 

  • Hold and/or be eligible for teacher registration with the Teacher Quality Institute (TQI) prior to starting your employment.
  • Hold a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People (WwVP) registration. 
  • Be an Australian citizen and/or be permanent resident and/or hold a valid working visa.

  2. Contact details of two referees.
  3. A copy of your registration from your local regulatory authority. If currently studying, evidence of enrolment in an accredited Initial Teacher Education program.
  4. A two-page statement providing practice examples of your experience aligned to the Australian Professional Standards with an emphasis on your pedagogical philosophy and how you have strived to meet the diverse needs of students.
