Job description

In anticipation of an exciting new chapter of growth and expansion, we are inviting Expressions of Interest from professional’s keen to explore future opportunities with our team. Our focus is on attracting ACO’s who are driven by a commitment to service excellence as we enhance our operational capabilities across all our community bases through both fixed and touring positions.

What do our Aircrew Officers do?

The Aircrew Officer (ACO) supports the Pilot in Command (PIC) by providing timely and accurate information and advice to the PIC to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft by day and night, including Night Vision Goggle (NVG) operations. The Aircrew Officer is also responsible for assisting the medical crew on scene, with the main role of operating the rescue hoist.

Key Accountabilities

As an ACO your key accountabilities are to:

  • Assist the pilot to carry out all aeromedical, search and rescue, emergency and counter disaster operations and other government support duties.
  • Ensure the Captain is promptly advised on all matters affecting the safety, serviceability or effectiveness of the aircraft or the operation.
  • Carry out all duties and training in accordance with the LifeFlight Australia’s Operations Manual.
  • Ensure all required currencies and recencies are maintained.
  • Ensure compliance of all Policies and Procedures as set out in the Operations Manual.
  • Assist in ensuring that all flight and task documentation is accurately completed and that all crews are adequately briefed and de briefed on any deficiencies promptly addressed.
  • Undertake and support operational duties during emergencies and disasters as necessary.

About You
We are looking for experienced ACO’s who can demonstrate a background in a commercial or military environment and are looking for their next challenge. Along with excellent communication skills, and a keen interest in being part of a team, you will be comfortable offering operational support including administrative and other non-flight tasks.

Roster
The roster requirements will be dependent on position of either Fixed Base or HUB (Multiple bases).

  • Fixed Base ACO positions: Will work an equal time roster which may consist of 2 day shifts / 2 night shifts / 4 days off, or a standby roster of 7 x 24hr shifts followed by 7 days off.
  • HUB ACO positions: Will be required to work at all LifeFlight bases. The roster will be an equal time 45 days on / 45 days off, calculated over a 90 day period. (This roster requires flexibility, as this is not an equal time week to week roster).

Mandatory Requirements

  • Minimum 500 hours as a Helicopter Aircrew Officer
  • Certificate IV Aviation – Aircrew Officer
  • Winch and Rappel Competency Certificate
  • NVIS qualification
  • CASA Aviation Class 2 or Basic Class 2 Medical Certificate
  • Current Senior First Aid / CPR / Advanced Resuscitation Certificates
  • Crew Resource Management
  • HUET / EBS Qualified
  • Dangerous Goods Awareness
  • Ability to pass the LifeFlight Functionality Assessment (ACO)

Highly Desirable

  • Minimum 100 hours NVIS experience, including night winching
  • Front Left Hand Seat Operations (IFR)
  • AROC (Aeronautical Radio Operator’s Certificate)
  • SAR / EMS experience on B412 or AW139
  • Previous Rescue Swimmer Experience

Functionality Assessment
All ACO's will be required to complete a functionality assessment. The Functionality Test for the ACO role is made up of 5 components. All 5 components are to be completed within a two (2) hour timeframe.

  • Assessment 1 – Abdominal Strength Test – 30 sit-ups under 2 minutes
  • Assessment 2 – Upper Body Strength Test – 20 push-ups under 2 minutes
  • Assessment 3 – Safe lifting techniques – 5 kettlebell deadlifts
  • Assessment 4 – 1km Equipment Transfer (16kg) – under 10 minutes
  • Assessment 5 – 500m Stretcher Carry (16kg) – under 6 minutes
