This is an exciting opportunity for a Family and Carer to join our Community Mental Health team as a Peer Support Worker. The role will contribute to the development of sustainable recovery oriented practice through quality improvement activities and participation in meetings along with providing advocacy and support to our consumers and their families.

What you'll be doing

The Family and Carer Peer Worker will be located at Sutherland Hospital, drawing on personal lived experience of family/carer role for a consumer with Mental Health challenges, to develop empathic relationships and collaborating in planning, delivery and evaluation of the service. The goal of the position is to work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure Family Focus Recovery Framework is adopted within the practice, to develop resources and provide information to families and Carers by providing education and group interventions aimed at facilitating recovery principles of hope, choice, self determination and social connectedness.
In addition, this role provides information, advocacy, education and interventions to families and Carers of Mental Health consumers and who reside in the Local Health District.
Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.
All workers and new recruits are required to receive 2 doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine to commence employment/ engagement or continue to work within a NSW Health service.
A worker and new recruit will be considered compliant if they have a medical contraindication to all available Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccines and provide medical contraindication evidence in line with the policy requirements.
In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.
Category A workers and new recruits who are non-compliant with seasonal influenza vaccination or have a medical contraindication to influenza or COVID-19 vaccinations must comply with all other infection control risk reduction strategies as directed while working in a Category A position.

Selection Criteria: * Lived experience as a family member or carer for a person experiencing Mental Health challenges.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in health promotion or related discipline or extensive experience in the health promotion field, or combination of both study and work experience or for Non-Grad a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or willingness and commitment to obtain.
- Experience accessing and navigating health care services.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current local, State and National legislation and standards relevant to Mental Health.
- Familiar with lived experience values and principles, recovery principles, trauma informed care.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to provide quality written documentation through the use of proficient IT skills.
- Demonstrated a strong interest in new knowledge and emerging practices relevant to the being a Family and Carer Peer Support Worker.
- Current Drivers Licence (or a willingness to travel in accordance with the demands of the position).
