Job description

A privately owned Australian transport company that has depots in all major cities across Australia, they provide a high-quality range of services including interstate and local transport, warehousing and wharf cartage.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this position is responsible for leading a finance team of five including accounts payable and receivable, financial accountant, accountant and accounts officer.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Prepare and analyse monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Develop, monitor, and update budgets and forecasts in collaboration with executive teams to ensure financial goals are met.
  • Conduct variance analysis to identify discrepancies between budgeted and actual financial performance and provide insights for corrective actions.
  • Analyse costs related to logistics operations, identify cost-saving opportunities, and make recommendations for cost reduction strategies.
  • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of financial data.
  • Assist in tax compliance activities, including GST and payroll tax, and collaborate with external tax advisors.
  • Work with external auditors during annual audits, providing necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Manage and mentor the financial team, providing guidance, training, support and career development opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with various departments, including operations, procurement, commercial to provide financial insights and support business initiatives.
  • Maintain key relationships with banks, external accountants, auditors and other third parties.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state and local legal requirements, taxation obligations, accounting policies and standards, and internal financial policies.

Education, skills and experience expected for this position include:

  • Tertiary accounting qualification and/or post tertiary accounting qualification (CA/CPA etc)
  • Transport & Logistics industry knowledge/experience, preferred but not essential.
  • An analytical mind.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Commercial and business awareness.
  • Proficient with Microsoft office suite (Word/Excel/Outlook).
  • Demonstrated stakeholder engagement skills including the capacity to engage core functions and stakeholders.
  • Outstanding influencing and relationship building skills.
  • Proven ability to establish mechanisms, and apply a practical, results-focused approach, to effectively manage diverse risk in a complex organisation with multiple locations.
  • Organise and plan, meet rigid and conflicting demands and deadlines.
