THE POSITION

The Financial Accountant will apply principles of accounting to analyse financial information and assist in the preparation of the financial statements of accounts and associated reports.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer you will: 

  • Undertake a range of accounting tasks and processes that include month-end close, general ledger reconciliations (includes rates revenue and control accounts), chart of accounts maintenance and asset management as well as preparation of journals and trial balance.
  • Reconcile payroll including employee leave entitlements and STP on a fortnightly and annual basis. 
  • Coordinate and finalise the annual Fees & Charges for the annual operational plan. 
  • Completes grant acquittals as required (LIRS, RTR) in conjunction with the Grants Officer and Management Accountant.
  • Assist with the preparation of Council's Annual Financial Statements and Financial Data Return in conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer, Management Accountant, Finance Officer and other staff as required.
  • Prepare Council’s Monthly Finance Report to Council and Management Executive Team for the Chief Financial Officer to approve. 
  • Assist in the formulation, implementation, review and processing of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and process all relevant statutory returns and ensures Council's compliance with Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT), including preparing and submitting monthly Business Activity Statements (BAS) and annual FBT returns.
  • Manage, reconcile and record Councils leased assets on a monthly basis and Councils cash flow and investment requirements and ensure Council complies with the requirements of its Investment Policy and initiates a review of the Investment Policy on an annual basis.
  • Reconcile Council’s loans register and ensure all repayments are processed on or before the relevant due dates.
  • Maintain a register of Key Management Personnel and Related Party Transactions and ensuring Key Management Personnel comply with the reporting requirements as per the Policy adopted by Council. Recommends changes to that Policy from time to time.
  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer in delivery of information and reconciliations for the external audit and relieve and assist the Management Accountant with relevant duties as required.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

To be successful in this role, you will need

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in accounting or finance 
  • Experience in financial reporting to meet statutory and compliance obligations, including financial statements
  • Experience in the application of financial accounting principles and practices
  • Financial modelling skills and experience
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills
  • Member of Chartered Professional Accountants or other relevant accounting body
  • Drivers Licence
