Job description

Imagine your future with usAt ALS, we encourage you to dream big.

When you join ALS, you join a purpose and values-driven team that empowers you to innovate, create, and thrive.

Our global team turns up each day with passion and commitment to do amazing things, always challenging our thinking to find ways to solve some of the world’s most complex problems for a safer, healthier world.

The role
ALS Geochemistry is looking for a Fire Assayer to work in our Fire Assay section at our facility located in Kalgoorlie. Fire Assay is a process for analyzing precious metals in mineral samples.

This is a hands-on role requiring strong attention to detail. Day to day you'll be weighing samples, adding flux reagents, fusing the mixture in a high-temperature furnace and collecting precious metals (gold) through cupellation and prilling. Before sending the sample prills to the laboratory for testing, you'll need to thoroughly inspect the samples, fusion pots, lead buttons and prills to ensure the correctness and record any anomalies.

To be suitable for this role, you must have the ability to perform the procedure in a timely, organised and accurate manner. In addition, as this will employ a combination of intense heat (900 - 1100°C) produced by a furnace, dry chemicals and refractory materials on a regular basis, you must proactively look out for safety issues and practice fire assay safety procedures.

This is a full-time position working on a 3-days, 3-nights, and 3-off roster. The working hours are from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on days and 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM on nights.

The starting rate is $30.24 per hour. However, after receiving full training and completing competency assessment, this will be raised to $31.40 per hour.

This full-time position will involve working on a 3 Days, 3 Nights, and 3 Off (9 hours per shift) roster.

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform fire assay techniques such as fluxing, fusing and cupellation
  • Maintain and record equipment faults
  • Maintain productivity and turnaround time
  • Correct disposal of cupels and fire assay lead wastes
  • Inspecting samples, fusions, lead buttons and prills to ensure the assaying process was correct
  • Maintain a clean and tidy working environment
The essentials
  • Ability to follow set procedures and attention to detail
  • Ability to work rotating shifts
  • Ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines
  • The ability to work in a hot, manual-intensive work environment
  • To be flexible and reliable to meet the high demands of the section
This is a residential role, and you must be residing or planning on relocating to the Kalgoorlie Boulder Region with current Australian work rights to be considered.
