The Goulburn Flood Recovery Service (GFRS) is a partnership between a range of community services agencies across the region to provide outreach and relief support to those who have been impacted by the 2022 floods in the Goulburn region.

We now have a rewarding Full-time opportunity (Part-time negotiable, minimum 0.6 EFT) at FamilyCare for a Flood Recovery Support Worker to begin making a difference in the Seymour community. Coordinating outreach and relief support to those who have been impacted by the 2022 floods.

Responding to the needs of the Seymour community, our Flood Recovery Support Workers provide much-needed support and outreach to individuals and families who have been affected by the October 2022 floods in the region. The impacts of the recent flooding include loss of homes, employment, and loss of income.

These are crucial roles where you will see first-hand the impact you can have on the lives of at-risk members of your community and make a real difference to those who need it most. You'll do this by travelling throughout your assigned region to provide support as required, resulting in communities becoming reconnected as well as the appropriate distribution of much-needed resources and services (e.g. accessing grants and insurance claims).

Day-to-day duties will include, but are not limited to:

• Engaging with families and individuals who have experienced significant trauma, loss and grief
• Conducting outreach to community members that have been directly impacted by the floods through visits and/or phone contact, or otherwise through contact with families or individuals who come directly to the service itself
• Assessing the needs of families and individuals accessing support services and developing a plan of action accordingly

Note: this is a fixed term position until 30 September 2024, with the potential to extend if funding received. 

To be considered for this position, you should have an in-depth understanding of the complex needs of people facing high levels of stress or who have experienced trauma. You will have a high level of emotional intelligence, and your warm and engaging demeanour will allow you to communicate with at-risk community members effectively. 

You will draw on your experience in applying case management practices and techniques to ensure clients are provided with appropriate levels of support when they need it most. 

Above all else, you will be an empathetic individual who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of people who have been impacted by natural disasters. In the past, we’ve had retired school principals, teachers and care workers move into these shorter-term roles, keen to get involved in their community post-devastating disasters. We have also had university students working on relevant qualifications step up and gain some on-the-ground experience whilst they’ve been completing their studies. Final-year university students looking to gain some rewarding work experience before entering the field are encouraged to apply.

Requirements for this position are:

• Ideally a formal qualification in a discipline related to health and community services (e.g. Diploma of Community Welfare, Bachelor of Social Work/Psychology, etc.)
• Candidates will be required to hold a Working with Children Check, valid Victorian driver licence, satisfactory National Police Check and a minimum 2 doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine
• Note: candidates who have spent 12+ months overseas in the last 10 years will also be required to present evidence of an International Police Check
