Kalgoorlie School of the Air (SOTA) is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Gardener - Handyperson to join their friendly team.

The Gardener-Handyperson will work as part of a team providing gardening, grounds and facility management to ensure a safe and clean school environment. You will be responsible for maintaining the presentation of the school grounds and gardens in an attractive, clean and tidy condition, and provide a suitable growing environment for both soft and hard landscaping. The successful applicant will perform minor repairs and maintenance as required, as well as other Gardener-Handyperson duties in accordance with the Department’s policies and guidelines.

Kalgoorlie School of the Air caters for the educational needs of isolated children from Kindergarten to Year 6 in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. Our students are onsite four (4) times a year, for camps and in-school visits.

  2. A cover letter addressing the Work Related Requirements, detailing your experience in the context of the role and business needs of the school.

You will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  1. Sound communication and interpersonal skills.
  2. Experience in maintaining grounds and gardens, including turf management.
  3. Experience in minor servicing of horticultural/gardening equipment and performing minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
  4. Knowledge of gardening methods and procedures, including the safe use and storage of gardening equipment, materials and chemicals.

Eligibility and Training requirements  

Employees will be required to:

  • complete introductory School Gardener training within 3 months of commencement in metropolitan areas or as soon as practicable for regional areas
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
