This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 2, 2024

John Butler Primary College are seeking a reliable and enthusiastic Gardner – Handyperson to join their friendly team.

The successful applicant should be a self-starter and take pride in working to a high standard. Applicants with the ability to work unsupervised and those with previous experience in upkeep of grounds or horticulture are favourable. Our ideal applicant should enjoy working in an outdoor setting and have a passion for creating and maintaining beautiful outdoor spaces and grounds that present a positive and safe environment for students, staff and community.

Well-developed interpersonal skills with ability to interact with all people in a multicultural and diverse community, including individuals with disability who may require adaptive communication styles are desirable. Additionally, applicants should have initiative to independently identify and undertake maintenance of gardens and grounds and minor repairs required without specific direction.

John Butler Primary College is a ‘one school’ model, inclusive of both education Support and mainstream educational settings. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Sound communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in maintaining grounds and gardens, including turf management.
  • Experience in minor servicing of horticultural/gardening equipment and performing minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of gardening methods and procedures, including the safe use and storage of gardening equipment, materials and chemicals.

Eligibility and training requirements 

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • complete introductory School Gardener training within 3 months of commencement in metropolitan areas or as soon as practicable for regional areas;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
