About the role
The General Manager Variety Development will lead and be accountable for the development of world-class varieties to maximise a whole-of-industry profitability and sustainability for sugarcane production. This role reports to the Chief Executive Officer and leads the Variety Development business unit, comprising of scientific leaders and specialists within the sugarcane industry.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead the people and the program to deliver continuous improvement in plant breeding and development of superior varieties
- Lead industry engagement in variety release decisions, development and delivery of performance information through a range of channels, and support rapid and correct variety adoption decisions
- Align breeding and research activities to deliver the strategic plan, annual operating plan and transformational plans
- Manage business unit budgets and create revenue through consulting and commercialisation opportunities
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with key external partners and stakeholders
- Contribute technical and strategic guidance to the portfolio of research projects that support Variety Development
- Participate as an effective member of the leadership team to deliver SRA strategic, HSE and financial objectives while building a professional and engaged team across SRA
You will bring with you the following qualifications, capabilities and experience:
Essential:
- PhD in a relevant discipline and at least 10 years’ professional experience
- Significant experience leading large scale pragmatic plant breeding
- Track record in the development and commercialisation of successful varieties
- Experience implementing new technologies and tactics supporting increased rates of genetic gain and novel trait deployment
- Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining strong professional networks at national and international levels
- Management training
- Knowledge of sugarcane breeding
- Knowledge of sugarcane farming systems and industry dynamics
