About the role
Reporting to the GIS Technical Lead, the GIS Data Engineer’s role will assist in the maintenance, performance, and customisation of Southern Ports ArcGIS Enterprise geospatial platform. This position will play a key role in the design, documentation, and implementation of business system integrations, establishing resilient data pipelines, and ensuring that all geospatial solutions meet the organisational needs.
The GIS Data Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the quality and accessibility of geospatial data within the platform, implementing solutions to streamline GIS workflows and elevate application performance. The role is also responsible for assisting in the development of custom spatial solutions to address specific business needs and enhance geospatial functionalities.
This is a full-time role in Perth but can be based in Albany, Bunbury or Esperance and some travel will be required.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate in the design and implementation of robust data pipelines and system integrations within the Southern Ports ArcGIS Enterprise (essential).
- Ensure the accuracy, quality, and accessibility of geospatial data within geospatial systems
- Continuously assess workflows, technology, and solutions to provide the most appropriate data for business needs
- Collaborate with SPA business functions to ensure fit-for-purpose solutions are offered using the most appropriate technologies.
- Development of tools and scripts to automate geospatial tasks to improve productivity and consistency
- Documentation of application design process, workflows, and issue resolution
- Ensure the availability and responsiveness of the Enterprise GIS system to meet user requirements
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in a timely manner
- Assist in the upgrade and improvement of hardware and software to maintain and keep GIS technology current
- Assist in developing, testing, documenting, and commissioning spatial analytical solutions including web maps, apps, dashboards and reports for desktop and mobile
Experience and Requirements
- 5+ years’ experience in geospatial systems, web applications, and data management
- Experience in ESRI platform, including ArcGIS Enterprise suite (desktop, portal, server and online) (essential)
- Experience in delivering spatial solutions and applications to meet customer requirements
- Experience in spatial programming (FME, Python, JavaScript, SQL, JSON, HTML/CSS)
- Tertiary qualifications in geographic information science, computer science, or a relevant field
- Agile project methodology
- Knowledge of Cartography, geodesy, database management and surveying fundamentals
- Knowledge of spatial database methods and principals, coordinate systems, spatial data models and ETL toolset (essential)
- Knowledge of best practice in the delivery of geospatial solutions, primarily for web map applications and data integration (2D/3D) (essential)
- Highly developed verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to resolve problems, negotiate and consult with a range of stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks and work independently
- Strong commitment to customer service
- Passion for innovation and a drive to continuously improve processes and deliverables

Requirements
To be eligible for this 2-year fixed term full-time role, applicants must provide proof of Australian citizenship or permanent residency.
The successful applicant must have a current WA driver’s licence, be able to obtain and maintain a Maritime Security Access Card and undergo a pre-employment medical assessment including drug and alcohol testing.
