About this role
A handyman or maintenance person is responsible for a variety of tasks related to the upkeep, repair, and improvement of buildings, facilities, and equipment. The job description typically includes the following duties and responsibilities:
Job Title: Handyman / Maintenance Person
Key Responsibilities:
General Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as replacing light bulbs, fixing leaky faucets, and repairing broken locks.
- Patch and painting of walls.
- Conduct basic plumbing tasks including unclogging drains and repairing toilets.
- Handle basic electrical repairs, such as replacing outlets and installing light fixtures.
- Perform carpentry work, including fixing doors, windows, and furniture.
- Furniture assembling.
Preventative Maintenance
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities to identify and resolve issues before they become major problems.
- Maintain and service heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
- Ensure that all safety systems, such as smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, are in working order.
Equipment Maintenance
- Maintain and repair various pieces of equipment used in the building, such as appliances, and security systems.
- Keep an inventory of maintenance supplies and tools, and reorder as necessary.
Property Management Support
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of events, including arranging furniture and equipment.
- Managing landscaping and grounds keeping duties contractors.
Record Keeping
- Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, including repairs made and materials used.
- Keep track of scheduled maintenance tasks and ensure they are completed on time.
Skills and Qualifications:
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in using hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of building systems, including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical manuals if need to.
Physical Skills:
- Good physical stamina and strength to perform manual labour.
- Ability to work in various environments, including outdoors and at heights.
Problem-Solving Skills:
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
- Ability to identify problems and develop effective solutions.
Communication Skills:
- Good verbal communication skills to interact with tenants, colleagues, and supervisors.
- Basic written communication skills for record keeping and reporting.
Other Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a maintenance or handyman role.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- The job may require working in various settings, including residential buildings, commercial properties, and outdoor areas.
- Occasional overtime, evening, or weekend work may be required to address emergencies or complete projects.
