The Mackerel Islands are a collection of 10 pristine islands and atolls scattered off the mid-coast of Western Australia, in the spectacular Pilbara region. One island currently welcomes guests from late March to October – Thevenard Island – with accommodation, facilities and activities available. Are you a skilled Master V Skipper with maintenance experience?
We are taking applications from flexible, capable, energetic, and adventurous individuals to join our small team on Thevenard Island for the season. Our ideal candidates will be passionate about the ocean and marine wildlife.
We are seeking an experienced Maintenance person / Skipper to join our team to operate our 18m Landing Barge and assist with other vessel and island activities. Successful candidates will be offered a full-time contract with immediate start until the end of the tourism season in October 2024, with the hours worked to be on any day of the week.

This is a full-time role, with staff accommodation available on Thevenard Island.
The role will be split with 2-3 days per week skippering duties, and the other days assisting the island maintenance team with general maintenance duties.
Duties will include:
Skipper duties;
- Operate the weekly landing barge to transfer freight and other goods
- Perform repairs and maintenance to all vessels, outboards and facilities
- Routinely inspect and maintain moorings including anchors, buoys, shackles, ropes and lines
- Management of freight loading and unloading
- Splice of rope and mooring lines
- Maintain vessel logbooks and records, and update computer-based maintenance records
- Supervise and assist All-Rounder/Deckhand with vessel operation and tasks
- Assist with private boat arrivals and departures, including on-loading and loading of luggage
- Assist with hiring of plaka boats including launching and retrieving
Maintenance duties;
- Perform a wide range of general maintenance and yard duties
- Maintain high level of customer service ensuring guest satisfaction
- Preventative & reactive maintenance schedules & daily tasks
- Day to day grounds and maintenance duties, including accommodation maintenance, rubbish runs, grounds presentation
- Assisting with incoming freight loading & unloading
- Assist with guest arrivals, departures, and requests
- Maintain high level of customer service ensuring guest satisfaction
Selection Criteria
- Demonstrate a level of fitness to safely perform labour intensive duties
- A positive attitude and strong work ethic – you must be resilient'
- Awareness of the nature of living and working in a remote and isolated environment. A love of the outdoors and marine environment is definitely essential
- Pride in delivering a high standard of customer service to guests and customers
- Be a quick learner who can think on their feet
Minimum qualifications required:
- Master <24m NC and Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 NC certificate of competency
- Current Drivers Licence with 'F' Endorsement
- Current First Aid certificate & CPR
- A current National Police Clearance or willing to obtain
The following skills, experience or qualifications are desirable:
- Trade qualification (Refrigeration, Electrical, plumbing, Carpentery)
- Basic computer and office skills
