About the role

As a full-time Hatchery technician, you will be employed by Monsoon Aquatics at our Bundaberg facility to care for multiple aquatic taxa, life support systems, and lead day-to-day technical duties associated with our hatchery and lab as it contributes to our wider aquaculture program. Other general duties include supporting the team to receive coral, fish, and invertebrates as they are delivered back to the facility and assist with projects and system installations related to aquaculture and hatchery expansions and renovations. You will play a vital role in hatchery operations ensuring all Standard Operating Procedures are followed, implemented, and maintained, and the hatchery and lab areas, and associated equipment, are maintained for optimal operation and good workflow. 

Skills and experience
Essential Criteria
  • Excellent Computer skills
  • Proven teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of key hatchery activities including live feed production, broodstock husbandry and conditioning and early growout.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining micro-algae cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in larval rearing and grow-out.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of hatchery hygiene, disease and pest ingress, and minimisation/control. 
  • Data handling and report and manual writing experience.
  • Laboratory experience and skills
Preferred Criteria
  • Coral species identification
  • Degree or higher qualification in a relevant field (Aquaculture or marine biology)
  • Experience with copepod cultures.
  • Experience with hatchery system design and construction
