This is a nine (9) month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 2, 2024 with possible extension (12 months) and/or permanency
Busselton Senior High School (SHS) is seeking an innovative educator and leader to take on the role of Head of Department (HOD) – Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS).
In this role, you will be a key member of the school leadership team with the skills to be innovative, future-focused and be committed to making a difference in the lives of young people. You will be able to build positive professional relationships, be an expert classroom practitioner with a passion for HASS and excellence in teaching. In partnership with teachers, you will continue building a culture of quality teaching across the learning area that supports the learning needs of all students. You will have experience in leading curriculum development and share our commitment to our community that every child will receive a high-quality education and leave our school with choices and opportunities for the future.
The successful applicant will provide direction and purpose to staff, build team capacity and cohesion, and promote an environment of positive quality learning experiences for all students.
You will be responsible for the planning, actioning, and reviewing of the various contexts delivered across the school, as well as developing strategies and learning programs to ensure engagement and improved learning outcomes for students. A thorough understanding of curriculums and pathways is highly regarded.
The successful applicant will provide curriculum leadership to teachers and facilitate teaching and learning outcomes through effective performance and development, modelling and promoting a culture of improvement.

Busselton SHS is situated in a coastal town in the Southwest of Western Australia. The school was established in 1958 and has served the community for over 60 years. Busselton SHS has a proud history with fine traditions in place, created by the various student bodies over time, along with a loyal, dedicated staff. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements: * Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;

  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
  • hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
