Champion Bay Senior High School (SHS) is an Independent Public School seeking to appoint a passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic leader as a Head of Learning Area (HOLA) – Health and Physical Education. Aspirant leaders are strongly encouraged to apply.

About the Role

As a member of the School Leadership Team, you will contribute to the implementation of the school’s Business Plan through participative decision making whilst promoting the school’s vision and strategic directions. It will be highly desirable for the successful applicant to have the ability to lead change, supported by their capacity to use evidence-based data to inform their decision making to implement innovation within the Learning Area.

You will work as part of a collegiate team and be solutions focussed. As HOLA – Health and Physical Education, you will continually drive improvement by providing proactive leadership that is collaborative, inspiring and supportive. The successful applicant will lead flexible and adaptive teachers who will apply differentiated instruction and explicit teaching across all year levels.

By leading a professional learning community, the HOLA - Health and Physical Education will ensure that HPE teachers develop consistent instructional practices that optimise student learning and engagement. The successful applicant will lead reflective performance development discussions with staff, based on a comprehensive knowledge of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. This may be through coaching, developing an ethos of teacher self-reflection, feedback, data analysis and a review of summative and formative assessment practices. Facilitating the effective implementation of instructional intelligences, classroom observation and student voice, you will also model highly reflective practices as both teacher and leader.

The HOLA - Health and Physical Education should possess a thorough understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum and Senior Secondary Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) Courses. It will be highly desirable for you to have experience in the planning, development, and delivery of Health and Physical Education - based Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) courses. It would also be desirable to have relevant Certificate IV qualifications to deliver Sport and Recreation certificates.

Champion Bay SHS will work with its fourth cohort of Year 12 students in 2024. The school has a Selective Academic Program in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), which draws students from across the Geraldton region. The School is a PBS school.

The school has developed strong, innovative partnerships with its local primary schools and community organisations. A commitment to the school’s emphasis on pastoral care and social and emotional learning initiatives, will be highly regarded as well as active promotion of the school’s vision, moral purpose and values within the school and the wider community.

Champion Bay SHS located in Geraldton, opened in 2019 and caters for students in Year 7 to 12 in 2024. We are currently a partner in the Geraldton Lighthouse Project, a program developing and implementing best practice for students with autism.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements

 Employees will be required to:

  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
  • Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment.
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • Complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
