Aveley Secondary College (SC) is seeking a dedicated and innovative Head of Learning Area - Science to join our leadership team. The successful candidate should have the capacity to provide educational leadership across the Learning Area and broader school community. In collaboration with the school’s leadership team, the Head of Learning Area will support the implementation of the college business plan and support the College’s pedagogical approach of Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI). This includes leading curriculum development to cater for EDI sequencing and lesson design as well as applying Classroom Management Strategies and progressive use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the classroom. Support and training is provided for these key areas.

To be successful for this role, you will be responsible for developing and managing an effective team, with a focus providing high quality teaching and learning to achieve outcomes for students. They should provide curriculum leadership and coordinate the planning and delivery of science content as well as monitoring of assessments and student progress. The successful applicant will ideally possess outstanding data analysis skills and the ability to apply this to improve student performance and achieve enhanced academic outcomes.

The Head of Learning Area - Science will ideally be an expert classroom practitioner with a passion for their subject and the capacity to build a culture of excellence in their Learning Area that supports the needs of all students. Their own professional practice should display proven success working with all range of students from Years 7 to 12. Successful applicants will ideally have displayed knowledge of the Australian and Western Australian Curriculum for Science and the implementation requirements which accompany these along with the capacity to manage a large team of staff. Additionally, they should also display an ability to build capacity to oversee compliance and delivery of Senior School Courses.

Aveley SC opened in 2018 with Year 7 and now offers a full range of classes from 7-12. Committed to excellence, the College has established a progressive and future-focused approach to meeting student needs. The curriculum is engaging and heavily incorporates technology, with support for STEM and the Arts. The College has implemented Explicit Direct Instruction as its signature pedagogy, providing professional development to staff to ensure proficiency in planning and lesson delivery. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

• Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings.
• High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes.
• Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
• Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

 Employees will be required to:

• provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
• consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment.
• obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
• complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
• complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
• complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
• complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
